How can I connect my device and dial up my ISP at the same time?

I too had the same problem. I still have the situation where my dial-up connection
comes up and I have to hit cancel twice. However I now can have ISP connection and HPC
Sync at the same time without error messages. If you have Windows 98 the solution
is as follows: (from pg 18 in PCNovice Guide To Computing Portables &
Windows CE Vol. 6 Issue 11, one of the most practical publications I've found)
Go to the Start Menu, then Control Panel. Double click the Network control panel. Click
the Add button. Double-click Adapter. A new window will open; in it, select Microsoft in
the Manufacturers field, then Dial-Up Adapter. Now wait until the window closes and you're
back at the main Network Control Panel window. Do not select Cancel; you computer is busy
making the changes. When the Network control panel reappears, you should see two Dial-Up
Adapters listed. One should say simply Dial-Up Adapter, the other Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN
Support). Likewise there should be two TCP/IP adapters listed. After you've confirmed
this, close the control panel. You computer may ask you for your Win98 CD, so you might
want to have it ready. You will be prompted to restart your computer. After your computer
reboots, hook up your CE machine. Yes, you'll have to cancel two Dial-Up connect boxes (or
you might want to just let it connect, I have'nt tried that yet) but then after you
sync up, go ahead and dial up your ISP. You'll have both connections running
simultaneously.
If you're using Win95 on your desktop, you'll first need to install
the upgrade to Dial-Up Networking. Insert the Windows CE Services 2.0 CD-ROM, wait for the
Windows CE Servies menu to appear and then select option 4: Optional Components from the
menu. A directory will open. Open the Microsoft Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Upgrade
version 1.2 folder. The window that opens may be small, in which case the folder may be
abbreviated "Microsoft Windows..." Double-click the Msdun12 file to run the
upgrade installer. You'll be asked to agree to the software license and the software will
be copied to your hard drive.
When the file copying is finished, you'll be asked to click OK to restart the computer.
After you computer reboots, Windows will configure and finish installing the upgrade. You
may get error messages about the installation trying to copy files that are older than the
onew already on your computer. Go ahead and click Yes to keep the newer versions. After
the installation is complete, your computer will restart one more time. The next time the
computer boots up, it will be ready to go - you'll be able to connect to your CE computer
and ISP at the same time. If you open the Network Control Panel, you'll notice you now
have two dial-up adapters, not one. One is for you ISP, the other is for your CE computer.
The reason both couldn't peacefully coexixt before is that they were using the same Dial
Up Adapter, which just won't work.
I'd run down to Barnes and Noble and pick up a copy of this little publication. It's FAR
more useful than the $16.95 Microsoft Book I purchased earlier. It's the best $5.95 I've
spent since buying my NEC MobilePro.
