My Delights

by

Hugo van Staden

If roses be my joy
Its rapturous scent and colour
Be the ploy that snares me
Then with delight only let it be
Let me succumb to all its flavours
Let it surround, engulf and smother me
Let it pervade, its beauty and delicate sensual aroma
That lingers on in thoughts and memory
Ah! To be in a rose garden!

Roses must surely be
The closest thing to all perfection
A gift so generous of life's unending joy
Like a beguiling Madonna
That spirals you into dizzy raptures
Of pinks and reds and yellow and whites
Like the symbol of a rainbow all in one garden
All in one perfect rose, petals rare and fine
A timeless wonder to behold! For be it but a rose
Yes! Yes! Only a rose, for only a rose it can be.
