"At Middletown in 1862 he was assigned to hold a battery horse while the guns were in action. The horse's head was resting against his shoulder when a cannonball came along and took it off to the eyes. The shock made Ginger, then a raw soldier, for a time an invalid. He was noted among his comrades as a man of great bodily strength, and as a weigh lifter and a wrestler. He is recalled as having under fire carried a wounded comrade from the battlefield for a distance of half a mile."
