Mission Statement

To coordinate and facilitate preventative social and recreational services for Edmonton residents 45 years of age and over and to provide outreach counselling and referral services.

History of the Agency

In 1970 a group of Danish seniors began meeting weekly in the basement of St. Joseph's Cathedral. As membership increased, formal funding was applied for and a drop-in centre was formed. In 1976 West Edmonton Seniors was officially incorporated under the Societies Act. Membership grew rapidly in the 1980's to 900+ members.

The centre, in need of more space, moved to the Edmonton General Hospital in 1991. Originally on the main floor of the hospital, it moved to the sixth floor in 1993, and then back again to the main floor in 1997 into what used to be the Day Hospital.

We offer preventative programs and services that meet the social, recreational and educational needs of our members. We promote activity and productivity.

Volunteerism is an important part of the centre. Members have numerous opportunities to volunteer their time and expertise. Outreach has been an important part of the centre and will be expanding operation in the coming years to keep up with the needs that are becoming ever apparent within the community.
