Primero

Primero is similar to modern poker but with a smaller deck.  The 8's, 9's, and 10's are all removed.  The idea of play is to assemble certain hands while bets are placed.  The ranking of the hands is quite different from poker. The list of possible hands follows:

Chorus - This is the best hand, four of a kind.
Flush - Four cards of the same suit.
Supreme - A hand containing an ace, six, and seven of the same suit.
Primero - One card of each suit.
Numerus - The lowest hand; a mini-flush of two or three cards of the same suite.

The players ante up, and each player is dealt two cards going counterclockwise around the table.  The player on the dealer's right either places a bet or exchanges one or both cards.  If no bet is placed, the next player in the circle has the same option, and it continues around the table.  When a player decides to bet, all card exchanging stops.  The hand is redealt if nobody bets.

After a bet has been made, each player either decides to fold or call the bet.  Here's an interesting rule.  If nobody calls, the last player in the circle MUST match the bet and continue playing.  Raising the bet is also allowed.  The additional raises, however, must be withdrawn if the subsequent players refuse the bet.

When the betting is done, each player who has not folded is dealt another two cards.  This is followed by another round of betting.  The betting player must announce the rank of the hand.  Bluffing comes in by announcing a rank higher than one's actual hand.  The only time an announcement of lower rank is allowed is when one is holding a Chorus when the previous player has announced either Flush or Primero.

This round of betting is followed by another exchange of one or two cards.  The players then show their hands. The winner is the person with the highest point total of their rank cards.  The card points are:

Seven 21
Six 18
Ace 16
Five 15
Four 14
Three 13
Two 12
Face Cards 10

For example, someone with four 5's would score 60 points.  Someone with the 6, 4, and King of spades (a Numerus) scores 42.  If there is a tie, the winner is the first player on the dealers right.
