Dufus & Shirt…

…in 'Operation Highland Terror'

Chalky was allegedly in Austria (it later transpired that this was a lie, he was in fact on his way home from Austria) and Enigma was working, so it was Dufus and Shirt who made their way to London for a "double header". The release of The Macra Terror and The Highlanders audios on CD, had led to signings being organised at Seventh Galaxy (with Anneke Wills) and at the What Shop (with Frazer Hines). The plan was drawn up with military precision (worthy of UNIT's heyday), and it was agreed that Shirt should go to Anneke first, whilst Dufus went to Frazer. With the Anneke signing due to start an hour before Frazer, Shirt was hopeful that they would be able to swap. Both were equipped with mobile phones, Shirt having bought his, only a few days before.

Separating at East Ham station, both managed to get near the front of their respective queues. At the What Shop, Frazer had already arrived, in fact Dufus mistook his chatting to one of the shop assistants for the soundtrack of "The Highlanders". Dufus was pleased to learn that Frazer would be signing early, and purchasing two CDs whilst feigning concern as to Shirt's whereabouts. Outside, he attempted to contact Shirt, but due to Shirt's phone having a low battery, was unsuccessful as Shirt had turned his phone off. Once the signing began, there were so few queuing that Dufus managed to go round several times, whilst waiting for Shirt to appear.

Meanwhile at Seventh Galaxy, Anneke had also arrived early, but spent all of this extra time signing pre-ordered CD covers. Just as the signing was about to begin, Dufus finally made contact, and after a brief discussion, rushed to join Shirt. As a long queue had formed, Shirt took Dufus' items from him, and managed to get all of them signed. The two, then returned to the What Shop, where Shirt got the rest of his items signed by Fraser. However, this included "The Macra Terror" already signed by Anneke.

Unfortunately, Fraser was less than subtle about this, exclaiming loudly "How did you get this signed by Anneke ?". Shirt's attempts to quieten him before a shop assistant heard, failed dismally. Stressing that he had bought "The Highlanders" as required, and deciding not to argue that all the other items that he had just got signed had originally been purchased at the What Shop, Shirt was begrudgingly allowed to get the cover signed. Leaving the shop quickly to avoid an unpleasant scene, the two friends returned to the Underground. Unfortunately, Dufus forgot that in order to pass through the barrier, it is necessary to insert your ticket, and caused a slight "jam".

As it was only just past lunchtime, the two of them decided to use a voucher saved by Shirt to visit the London Dungeon. On arrival, there was a long queue, so like the good DW fans that they are, they joined it. TWO HOURS later, they finally got inside, and spent an hour or so looking at wax figures in extreme agony (the figures, not Dufus & Shirt), riding the "Judgement Day" water ride, walking in the footsteps of Jack the Ripper, and listening enthralled to GOD (or Tom, as he's also known) narrate the story of the Great Fire. Returning home, via Butler's Wharf, enabling Dufus to attempt an abysmal Peter Davison impression ("A hundred years ago....."), our friends caught a train home. Unfortunately, also on said train was the shop assistant that had rebuked our heroes earlier. Showing a level of idiocy surpassing even himself, Dufus sat down opposite him, blatantly displaying his What Shop bag. Luckily, it seemed that no nastiness had resulted, and making their excuses, the two moved well away from him. Arriving back at Dufus' home, they made plans for the next day's jaunt to Longleat with Des Res. A phone call from Chalky confirmed that he would be attending too. The weekend had only just begun.....
