Dufus and
Shirt...DON'T Meet the Rani

Chalky was visiting long-lost relatives in Huntingdon, and Dufus and Shirt found themselves at a loose end. Both being childish (not child-like) at heart, Shirt's suggestion that they go to see a pantomime, was immediately accepted. A cursory look at local attractions narrowed the choice to two: Peter Pan, with the ever youthful Bonnie Langford and one-time Davros aide Leslie Grantham, or Aladdin with Joan Collins wannabe and renegade Time Lady Kate O'Mara. The addition of two of the stars of "Sherlock Holmes: The Musical", namely Robert Powell and Louise English, and the fact that Shirt was already booked to see Bonnie with his family, meant that a trip to Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre was decided upon.
However, before a final decision could be made, Dufus had to check whether his finances allowed for such an extravagance (although they easily allowed him to spend over £50 on deleted videos, without a second thought). Having entered various transactions into his computerised accounts system, the response was NO. However, having fiddled the figures, the answer miraculously became YES. Shirt then came up with a cunning plan, if the two of them left immediately, without pre-booking, they might be able to get standbys. Therefore, the two of them quickly grabbed possible items for autograph (including the TARGET "Mark of the Rani" novelisation for Chalky), ran to Dufus' car, and drove away at speed with only a slight idea of how to get to the theatre.
The trip was remarkably uneventful, with Shirt navigating (well sort of), with both of our friends keeping a close eye on the car's clock. Reaching Guildford in plenty of time, they decided to take a tour round all of its sights, as they desperately tried to negotiate the one-way system. With ten minutes to spare, they managed to park, and Shirt ran to the box office, and managed to get two standbys. Pausing briefly to buy programmes, they found their way to their seats, in the fourth row of the stalls. It was at this point that they realised that Shirt had left his gold and silver pens behind, and all that they had for Kate to sign video covers was one old black biro between them.
The lights went down, and the show started, ON TIME. Along with the aforementioned stars, they also experienced the varied talents of Trevor Bannister (ex-"Are You Being Served") , Robin Askwith (star of the "Confessions" films), Frederick Pyne (ex-"Emmerdale Farm") and Naoko Mori (Saffy's friend in "Ab Fab"). Ms. O'Mara appeared at the end of Act 1 as the Genie of the Lamp, wowing the audience with Shania Twain's "Man I Feel Like A Woman". During the interval, there was a deep conversation comparing the production to one in which Dufus and Shirt had personally appeared. Dufus claimed that his dame was better than Mr. Banninster's, but Shirt conceded that Mr. Powell's Abanazer was superior to his own, as he knew all his lines (and he didn't even write the script) and did not overact in a manner similar to Paul Darrow. Shirt then found himself transfixed by the little girl in front's panto souvenir, a small globe which lit up and slowly flashed. "It's an Auton globe !", Shirt exclaimed. Dufus pretended not to hear this, in a similar manner to that usually employed by Shirt when listening to Dufus.
The second act came to a close, and the two of them rushed out, and round to the stage door in an attempt to meet Ms. O'Mara, Mr. Powell and Ms. English. However, as they stood in the now slowly falling snow, Dufus was told in no uncertain terms by a rather fierce lady that the cast had another performance in half-an-hour, so no autographs. Unfazed by this, they decided to visit a friend who lived nearby, and return after the final performance. The performance that they had watched having lasted 2 1/2 hours, they decided to return in three hours.
Returning to Dufus' car, they both realised that they didn't know how to get to their friend's house. Therefore, Dufus phoned said friend on his mobile, who promised to get out the map, and phone back and direct us. Whilst waiting for the call, Dufus had a brainwave. "It must be the A3 we need. I'll drive back to there while we waiting !". A few minutes later, and a fair way to the A3, the phone rang. "Right. Firstly, you don't want the A3 !" (Cue: in-car argument). Finally, having been all the way round two roundabouts, and having gone round the Woking one-way system in a severe blizzard, they arrived at their destination.
Having enjoyed hospitality, they returned to Guildford, and almost exactly three hours after they had been there before, the two of them stood outside the stage door. However, there seemed to be a distinct lack of audience streaming out. The severe lady appeared again and informed the two friends that the show had finished some twenty minutes before and all the cast had left. No explanation was given as to how the show was twenty minutes shorter in the evening. Dufus and Shirt dejectedly made their way home, slightly disappointed, but they had enjoyed themselves. (OH NO THEY HADN'T!!) (OH YES THEY HAD !!)
