Chalky,
Shirt & Lupine……Sax and Violence
Dufus didn't have a DVD player. Until Chalky and Shirt pointed this out to him, he was all set for going to the What Shop and purchasing the brand new Doctor Who - The Movie DVD and getting signed by Geoffrey Sax, director extraordinaire.
Late in the day, Shirt discovered that the utterly unrelated Mark Eden would also be present at the What Shop. Chalky told Lupine.
"Who's Mark Eden?" he asked.
"Tut…calls himself a fan," muttered Chalky. "He was in Marco Polo AS Marco Polo."
"Oh yeh," said Lupine.
"And he was the bloke who tried to kill Rita Fairclough in Coronation Street."
"Oh yeh," said Lupine.
"And he's married to Sue Nichols of Nadia Popov from Rentaghost fame."
"Oh yeh," said Lupine.
Chalky and Shirt arranged to meet Lupine at the shop and set off. Once there they discovered that they could either buy a book or some postcards to get Mark Eden's autograph. The book had nothing at all to do with Doctor Who but the postcards were of the Doctor Who Radio Times covers throughout the years, so they bought those. Funnily enough.
Chalky had struggled to find any items for Mark Eden, seeing as Marco Polo is one of the 'lost' stories. He scraped together the novelisation (already signed by Ping-Cho herself, Zenia Merton) and the MDW archive of said story. The postcard set he'd bought also had a Marco Polo image in it.
Shirt had managed to find a cheap copy of the Marco Polo novelisation in the What Shop's incongruous bargain box, which he purchased for Enigma to have signed.
Having got to the What Shop quite early, and not really wanting to be the first in the queue, Chalky and Shirt went off for a wander around the delights of East Ham. Eventually, Lupine made contact revealing he was but a few stops away. Chalky and Shirt headed back towards the What Shop to meet him.
On the way, Shirt attempted to find a public convenience which was neither engaged or out of order - he failed.
Back at the What Shop, Chalky and Shirt joined the queue with Lupine who had just emerged from the shop having been nearly persuaded to buy Mark Eden's book by the heavy salesman tactics of Joseph C. He hadn't given in though.
Standing in the queue, Chalky and Shirt marvelled at the fact that in front of them stood the same four or five fans that always came to the What Shop signings but never seemed to go that one stop further to 7th Galaxy. This, they decided was very odd, especially considering the number of 'rare' stars 7th Galaxy had recently hosted.
The signing soon started, although with Mark Eden not present, and the trio moved slowly to the entrance.
Just after the first 3 or 4 people had gone through, Mark Eden arrived and settled down at his desk, after having a chat with Geoffrey Sax whom he just discovered he actually worked with once.
With punters only being allowed in 2 at a time, it was Chalky's fate to remain on the threshold of the What Shop whilst Shirt and Lupine approached Mr. Sax. Luckily, Chalky had Buffy the door attendant to chat to. Women are just attracted to him, you see
J .Eventually, though, he had to tear himself away from Buffy and meet the stars.
Mr. Sax - who had apparently been bemoaning his commentary on the DVD as 'boring and dull' (not exactly inspiring confidence in those who had just purchased it) - chatted amiably with Chalky and commented that he hadn't read the Regeneration book that Chalky presented to him, but did have a copy on his bookshelf.
He had even stood up to greet Chalky as he entered, but was seemingly overwhelmed by it all - having failed to understand Shirt's request to simply SIGN his postcard NOT dedicate it. But Shirt's used to celebrities buggering up his autographs.
By the time Chalky had moved on to Mark Eden, Lupine had already left the shop and Shirt was just about to have a photo taken with Mr. Eden (by Chalky). This done, Shirt hung around to reciprocate the courtesy for Chalky.
Mr. Eden commented on how young he looked in Marco Polo and showed interest in the MDW archive, never having seen it before.
With photo done and thanks given, the trio left and headed up to 7th Galaxy.
"Hullo!" they cried.
"Hullo!" replied 7th Galaxy's ever-friendly staff.
"Where are you getting your TV Movie DVDs from?" asked Big Ted, with a knowing tone to his voice.
"You know exactly where we've just been, so stop trying to mess with our minds!" cried Chalky.
There was another brief discussion about those fans who seem to steer clear of 7th Galaxy and about the guests due to appear at 7th Galaxy's convention the following year, and after Chalky had impulse bought some Rolykin Daleks and the latest Benny novel, the trio headed off towards Naughty Asteroid.
But not before, Shirt had failed to find another set of facilities that was open.
A quick wander round Barking to establish that there were no other available facilities, and to buy some sandwiches, and the gang were back on the train.
At Naughty Asteroid, they wandered in nonchalantly to see if they could work out what was happening with a reported comics signing. Shirt had found out that Steve Moore - of Abslom Daak fame - and some other bloke who'd written some Peri strips (oo-er : if only!) were supposed to be signing new Transformer comics (honestly, some people just need to grow up!).
After establishing that said comics cost about thirty quid, the trio decided against standing in queue for the artists and went home instead. Although not before Lupine had hunted, unsuccessfully for a Star Trek mug (traitor!).
Eventually, after much searching, Shirt was able to use the facilities at Victoria Station, which was a relief for all concerned.
