The Raptors Lack Intensity
The Raptors Lack Intensity (January 10, 2000)

After watching the Raptors game yesterday, it is painfully obvious that this team is nowhere near playoff ready. The Raptors were without their two best shooters, Dell Curry and Dee Brown. Dee Brown is the Raptors backup point guard and sometimes shooting guard. Dell Curry is the Raptors backup shooting guard and sometimes small forward. This really restricts their matchups and depth. This kills them, because that means the designated shooter is either Doug Christie, too streaky to be consistent, or Charles Oakley, can't go farther back than 19 feet. I think there are a few more issues at work. One, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady were not on the floor down the stretch when the Grizzlies were extending the lead in the fourth quarter. Kevin Willis didn't play too after the first quarter. Mugsy Bogus is still getting too much playing time, and he's getting man-handled on the defensive end. I think Butch Carter is a good motivator, but still needs some time to learn how to deal better with rotations. He sits players for too long, which means others stay on the court for others. Vince Carter is the one player getting hurt most by the lack of shooters, he can't pass out of the double team to a shooter, there isn't any. The defense can play much tighter and he has less room to move. Bottom line, the Raptors need Brown and Curry back soon. That is obvious. As well, coach Carter needs a steadier rotation and the team needs to play with more intensity. On the other side of the ball, the Grizzlies are playing well for Lionel Hollins. Good for him and good for Vancouver.
