Baseball 1999

TIPS AND TECHNIQUES BASEBALL is a very subtle yet very intricate game. It's simplicity attracts a nation of followers while it's complexity plays havoc with would-be photographers. But, a good photographer like a good player soon learns to anticipate, even plan for what will happen. By learning the basics of the game you too will learn how to take better baseball photos.

EQUIPMENT--First and most important is a monopd on which to rest your camera. This will improve your photos greatly. Find one with a quick release head. Lenses should be adequate to cover the field, I carry 35mm up to 500mm and even a 2x converter for occasional use. I use Fuji 800 and Kodak Royal Gold 1000 speed films. This allows for fast shutter speeds even with the reduced lighting of a zoom lens. And yes, as I have said before, a flash is a good idea even outdoors.

Sports photography tips: Use 800 speed film. Use a monopod. Use fill flash for close-up portraits. Look for interesting angles to stadiums, fields and even fans to add interest to the composition. Pay attention to the action at hand; always be ready to shoot photos.

THIS GOES WITHOUT SAYING, BUT PAY ATTENTION to the game on the field. Baseballs, in case you have not yet noticed, travel very fast and a $3 baseball can destroy your $1000 camera. Keep you EYES on the GAME! (You might also get a good photo)

NEW!FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE ALL STAR GAME Photos are here!

MOST of the photos we do are of Florida State League teams as they are convenient and close by. Find a team in your area (even little league) and practice with your camera, plan and anticipate the action.

Chattanooga TN a view of Engel Field.

Engel Field is in it's last season as the Lookout's home. If you can get to Chattanooga this year, do so. This stadium is very unique and is a real gem.

The BALLPARK at ARLINGTON TX (Summer 1998)

This was a fun park. Lot's of details, even down to the seats, echoed the aura of Texas.......Definately an improvement over that dump where the Rangers used to play.
