pythons

These snakes are pythons; the orangey colored one is an albino python. This species of snake is known as a constrictor; this meaning they constrict (strangle) their prey; rather than using venom in order kill them. Constrictors are very strong and their bodies are pure muscle; which enables them to suffocate their prey. They must be very careful to sqeeze their prey until they feel no more pulse and are sure the prey is dead. This is because if the prey happens to regain consiousness during the swallowing process it can do some severe damage and even kill the snake. A constrictor that was constricting on a human would need 2 to 3 full size men to be able to remove it. This is why as responsible snake owners one should never allow the snake to curl around their neck. I owned a Boa constrictor and she was approximately 5 feet long. She was very handable though; and when she was agitated she always showed small tell tell signs so we would know not to bother her at that time.

Snakes have scales on their bellies which is what enables them to move so well. All snakes are meat eaters; the difference being in the size of the prey the individual species can intake. Some snakes can eat a full size goat; and some can only intake small field mice. WOW!! All snakes have poor hearing and eye sight; yet are excellent hunters. They smell with their forked tongues and feel the vibrations of the sounds.

Out of all the snakes the python is the most primitive in the ways that their bodies have went through less changes with evolution. Some pythons can reach the length of 30 feet long. As a snake grows it will shed it's old skin; when this happens the new beautiful shiny skin is exposed. Snakes need water for this process and will soak themselves for hours at a time and even sometimes days to help this process along. Also another contributing tool is rocks; when a snake glides against the rocks it helps him to remove the old skin. Boa constrictors bear live young and the python lays eggs and coils around them to keep them warm until hatching takes place which is usually about 80 days.

turtle

Turtles have a remarkable defense system; this is their shell. A turtle's shell protects his vital organs and is made up of two layers. The under layer is made up of hard boney plates, and the outer layer is covered with horny plates. The different layers overlap giving the armor great strength.

There are many different types of turtles; some live on land, ponds, streams, or even seas, but all lay their eggs on land. Some Sea Turtles can grow up to 8 feet and weigh in at 1,500 pounds, but are unable to retreat into their shells for defense like other turtles; therefor they must depend on their swimming abilities. Land turtles are usually much smaller; with the largest land turtle weighing in at approximately 500 pounds; most of them though are much smaller than that.

A turtle has no teeth; but does have a sharp beak which will allow it to eat fruit, vegetables, meat, or fish.
