This is Shihan Dai Febres and myself from 1998, standing before the "Kamiza" (shrine where the spirit dwells) of my dojo, the Nindo Ryu Fudoshin Kobukai, which is dedicated to perpetuating the various arts under the Nindo Ryu banner. The name of our dojo, specifically the Fudoshin Kobukai, have significant meaning. "FUDOSHIN" is a direct reference to Fudo-Myo, who is considered by some the Buddhist deity of fire and also an avatar that aids souls through Hell so that they can rejoin the wheel of life and achieve nirvana. It also refers to indomitable spirit, which cannot be bound, held back, or subjugated. "Kobukai" is a reference to where the ancient Martial Arts are taught. At our dojo, we focus upon the arts of Kobujutsu (ancient Martial Arts), which focus upon Ryukyu (Okinawan) and Japanese weaponry, Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu (the arts of Japanese fast-draw and swordsmanship), Jujutsu ("gentle art"), and Atemi Do ("the way of explosive striking"). With the exception of our regular Kobujutsu classes, the other arts mentioned are only taught on a private lesson basis.

The Kobujutsu division, now under my direction, has expanded the curriculum from the original 12 katas to over 35! I continue my study of Kobujutsu/Kobudo through various instructors, adding select katas from their systems to the Nindo Ryu syllabus, always giving credit where due. It is critically important, to preserve and perpetuate these diverse forms for future generations. Presently, I have four "Yudansha" (Black Belts) who have been certified under me. I am now one of 5 individuals who can now certify prospective candidates for various degrees of Black Belt without Shihan Dai Febres' presence.
