Introduction

Margaret Chambers, first wife of William Snodgrass of Jackson Township, Crawford County, Ohio, was the daughter of Thomas Chambers. Thomas died in 1856, (Will, Volume 7, page 516 of the Washington County Willbook of 1781-1900, probated Feb.1856 in Docket H of The Orphans Court Will dated April 23, 1851), and left the following heirs:

Snodgrass6-Elizabeth Walker: 7-James F. Snodgrass. Therefore, as previously mentioned, these families were of utmost importance in solidifying proof of our own Snodgrass ancestors:

Both stones are white in color and are very worn. Legible inscriptions are as such: Thomas Chambers, Died April 9th, 1856, Aged (looks like 81 years, 11 mos. __ds). Beside Thomas' stone is his wife’s, which reads Elisabeth, Wife of Thomas Chambers, Died Aug. 9th. 1855, the age is illegible. I have visited the graves and have a photo of both stones.


Last Will & Testament of Thomas Chambers
Will, Volume 7, page 516 of the Washington County Will Book of 1781-1900, probated Feb.1856 in Docket H of The Orphans Court. Dated April 23, 1851 --- heirs named were children James, Thomas, David, Elisabeth, Sarah, John, Margaret, Mary, Samuel, children of deceased daughter Margaret, grand daughter Elisabeth Jane Caldwell...also wife, no name given --- executor Henry Bruce. A Codicil was dated March 17, 1856, leaving the farm to son James Chambers.

I Thomas Chambers of the County of Washington and the State of Pennsylvania, being in perfect health of body and of sound and ____ mind and memory considering the certainty of death and uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desired to settle my worldly affairs, and hereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me home do therefore publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following (looks like what is todays). First my will is that the expenses of my last sickness and funeral be paid. Second all just debts by me owing at the time of my death (the rest is too difficult to make out). I leave to my dearly beloved wife the use of all my personal property and the farm on which I now live with the house and furniture during her natural life _______ her death. I do will and devise that my Executor sell my farm on which I now live within one year after my dearly beloved wife's death and be divided as follows --- I give once unto the children of my daughter Margaret now deceased fifty dollars to be equally divided among them. I give and devise unto my daughter Sarah sixty dollars. I give and devise unto my daughter Elisabeth four hundred dollars - I give and devise unto my daughter Mary fifty dollars. I give and devise unto my grand daughter Elisabeth Jane Caldwell when she arrives at the age of twenty one should my dearly beloved wife be yet living at her ___ fifty dollars. I give and devise unto my son Thomas one hundred dollars --- I give and devise unto my son Samuel four hundred and forty four dollars --- I give and devise unto my son John five hundred and thirty dollars --- I give and devise unto my son David three hundred dollars --- I give and devise unto my son James six hundred dollars. The balance of my estate to be equally divided among such of my children as shall be living at the time of my dearly beloved wife's decease. Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint Henry Bruce of the County of Washington to be the Executor of this my last will and testament revoking all former wills by me heretofore ___ ratifying and confirming this.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of April in the year of our Lord 1851 --- Thomas Chambers --- signed sealed published and declared by Thomas Chambers the above named Testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request came in his presence have _____ our names as witnesses hereunto --- Samuel Kelly, Elizabeth Bruce.

Codicil to the last Will and testament of Thomas Chambers

I Thomas Chambers being desirous that my son James Chambers shall inherit the farm on which I now live. I do revoke that part of my will which empowers my Executor to make sale of my said farm at my decease or that of my wife's ____ dispose of my said farm to my son James by __ in fee simple. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of March one thousand eight hundred and fifty six --- Thomas Chambers --- signed sealed published and declared by Thomas Chambers to the above named Codicil ___ his act and deed in presence of us who at his request and in his presence have subscribed our names as witnesses thereunto --- James McMillen, William McMillen

Washington County ____ Remember__ that on the 17th day of May A.D. 1856 Before me John Meloy, Registrar for the probate of wills and granting letters of Administration in and for the County came James McMillen and William McMillen the subscribing witnesses to the above Codicil appended to the last will of Thomas Chambers dec. Who after having been duly qualified according to law ___ ___ say that they were present at the execution of this same Codicil and saw the testator sign the same, that at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other they subscribed their names, by witnesses thereto that they ______ heard the testator publish pronounce and declare the foregoing to be as and for a Codicil to his Last Will and Testament hence at the time thereof he was of sound and disproving mind memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge observation and belief -- James McMillen, William McMillen.

There are two other statements to the affect of the one above, signed by Elizabeth Bruce and Daniel Kelly. I won't add them here but if fellow researchers want them please ask and I will furnish a typed copy.

As stated in The History of East Buffalo Church (1911), the East Buffalo Cemetery is located on land deeded to the German Societies of this neighbourhood being of the Presbyterians (?) and church persuasion for school, meeting house and burial ground forever, by Hardman Horn and Elizabeth his wife, Lawrence Streker and Barbara his wife, and Michael Ely and Mary his wife, in the year 1802. The East Buffalo Cemetery was used as a burial ground as early as 1796. It is located 1 mile south of Rt. 40 and adjacent to the East Buffalo Presbyterian Church. This list is taken from the Bi Centennial Publication Buffalo Township 1776-1976 Washington County Pennsylvania. Elizabeth McCullough was the d/o Samuel McCullough. Her sister Sarah McCullough married Thomas Chambers' brother John Chambers, who later moved with his family to Richland Co., Ohio. John and Sarah (McCullough) Chambers raised Thomas' grandson James Francis Snodgrass, s/o William Snodgrass and Margaret Chambers (after Margaret's early demise in 1848). Siblings of Elisabeth McCullough were Thomas McCullough, John McCullough, Samuel McCullough, James McCullough, Margaret McCullough, Sarah McCullough and Mary McCullough.
