William M. Snodgrass was b.December 19, 1807, in Canton Twp., Wash. Co., PA, d.February 17, 1882 in Crestline, Crawford Co., Ohio. He married first about 1830 to Margaret Chambers d/o Thomas Chambers and Elisabeth McCullough: married second on February 14, 1849, to Rachel Warden, d/o Sampson Warden and Elizabeth Allen (Marriages in Crawford County, Ohio, file No.388676 Vital Rec., vol.3-4, 1847-1854, and Marriages of Crawford County, Ohio, 1831-1989, Vol. 3, page 158): and married third on October 26, 1859, to Christiana Eichelberger (widow of Alanson Goodale) (Marriages of Crawford County, Ohio, 1831-1989, Vol. 5, page 291): Refer to the families of William Snodgrass and Margaret Chambers, Rachel Warden, and his marriage to Christiana for details.

William Snodgrass to Robert Wilson
This Indenture made the twenty sixth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight Between William Snodgrass and Margaret his wife of Canton Township, Washington County, Penna., of the one part and Robert Wilson of the said Township, County and State aforementioned of the second part.
Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of two thousand and three hundred dollars lawful money of the United States of America unto them will and truly be paid by the said party of the second part at or about the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained, sold, _______, released, conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien, _____, release, convey and confirm unto the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns.
All that tract parcel and tract of land bounded
and described being situate in Canton Township, Washington County
Beginning at a post by land of John Braddock, South thirty seven degrees east,
twenty and five tenths perches to a post, thence south seventy four degrees,
east fifteen and six tenths perches to a post, thence south thirty and one half
degrees, East sixty two perches to a locust thence North fifty four and one
fourth degrees east twenty eight and four tenths perches to a post, thence south
fifty six degrees, East thirty nine perches to a beech stump, thence south eight
degrees, West four perches to a black Walnut thence by land of Wilson Braddock,
John Scott and John McClelland North fifty five and one fourth degrees West one
hundred and ninety seven perches to a white oak thence south sixty eight degrees
west twenty two perches to a fallen Black oak thence by lands of Robert Wilson,
south sixty four degrees West seventy eight perches to the place of beginning.
Containing ninety four acres and seventy five perches, strict measure.
It is the same tract conveyed by Moses Braddock and wife to William Snodgrass, by deed dated 20th day of April, 1833, and by the last will and testament of the said William Snodgrass dec'd. bequeathed to the present grantor William Snodgrass his son, reference being had to the registrar and recorder's office at Washington, will more fully ____ at large appear.
Together with all and singular the buildings, implements, ways, waters, water courses, rights, liberties, privileges, hereditments and appurtenances whatsoever thereunto belonging or in __(two words)___ and the ______ and ______ rents _______ and profits thereof and all the estate right, title, interest, property, claim and demand whatsoever of the said part of the first part in law or ______ or otherwise howsoever of and to the same and every part therein.
To have and to hold the said messuage and tract of land, hereditments and premises hereby granted or mentioned and intended so to be with the appurtenances unto the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns, to and for the only proper use and behest of the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever.
And William Snodgrass the said party of the first part, his heirs, executors and administrators doth by these presents covenant grant and agree with the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns that he the party of the first part his heirs all and singular the hereditments and _______ herein ______ described and granted or mentioned and intended so to be with the appurtenances unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns, against him the said party of the first part and his heirs and against all and every person or persons whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or ____ part thereof, ____ and Will Warrant and forever Defend.

part have to these presents set their hands and ______ dated the day and year

Washington County ss. On the twenty eighth day of September, Anno Domino 1838, before me the subscribed, one of the justices of the peace in and for said County, came the above named William Snodgrass and Margaret Snodgrass _____ and deed, and desired the same might be described as such.
She the said Margaret being examined separate and apart from her said husband and the interests of the said Indenture being first made fully known to her declared that she did of her own free will and accord sign and seal and ___ her act and deed deliver the same without any coercion or compulsion of her said husband.

This Indenture made the tenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty two, Between Robert C. Snodgrass and Eliza Agnes his wife, Phillip Lewellan and Sarah his wife, Hamilton Vankirk and Eliza his wife, Elisha Ely and Kesiah his wife, William Snodgrass and Rachel his wife and Robert Jackson and Margaret his wife of the first part and Samuel Snodgrass of the second part. Witnesseth that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars lawful money of the United States of America, unto them will and truly paid by the said party of the second part ___ before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained, sold, aliened, ______, released and confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alein, ____, and confirm unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns, all the right, title, interest, property, claim of them the said parties of the first part and to a certain tract of land, lying being and situate in Canton Township Washington County Pennsylvania described by meters and bounds as follows, Beginning at a stone corner of Robert Jackson, thence by land of James McClain N.79ºE, 398/10 perches to a stake, thence by land of Robert Wilson N.1½ºE, 14588/100 perches to a stake, thence N.54¼ºW.4 perches to a white oak; thence N.11½ºW. 354/100 perches to a stake near a white oak, thence by of Jesse Clark S.75¾ºW 60 perches and 84/100 to a stake, thence S.91¾ºW, 4756/100 perches to a stone, thence by land of Robert Jackson S.15ºE, 20063/100 perches to the place of beginning, containing ninety six acres and twenty two perches, the same being the one half of the home farm of the late William Snodgrass deceased, together with all our right, title, interest and claim in and to any and every residuary estate or interest whatsoever which we may have in and to the estate of James Snodgrass, under the will of the said William Snodgrass deceased or in any other manner whatever.
Together with all and singular the buildings, improvements, ways, water, water courses, rights, liberties, hereditments and appurtenances whatsoever, thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining and the ____sions and __mainders, ____, issues and profits thereof, and all the estate, right, title, interest, property, claims and demand whatsoever of them the said parties of the first part, in law equity or otherwise howsoever of, in and to the same and every part thereof To have and to hold the said tract of land with the appurtenances and hereditments and premises hereby granted or mentioned and intended so to be, with the appurtenances unto the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns to and for the only proper use and ______ of the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns forever. And the said persons above named and their heirs, executors and administrators do by these presents, command, grant, and ____ to and with the said party if the second part, his heirs and assigns, that they the said parties of the first part, their heirs al and singular the hereditments and premises herein above described and granted or mentioned and intended so to be, with the appurtenances, unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns, against them the said parties of the first part, their heirs, and against all and every other person or persons whomsoever lawful claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof, except the life interest of said James Snodgrass under his father's will shall and will warrant and forever defend.

Snodgrass and Eliza Agnes his wife, Philip Luellen and Sarah his wife, Hamilton Vankirk and Eliza his wife, Elisha Ely and Kesiah his wife, Robert Jackson and Margaret his wife and in due form of law acknowledged the above Indenture to be their act and deeds, and desire the same might be recorded as such and the said Sarah Luellen, Eliza Vankirk, Keziah Ely, & Margaret Jackson being of full age and separate and apart from their said husbands by me thereon examined, and the full contents of the above Deed bring by me just made known unto them, did thereupon declare and say that they did voluntarily, and of their own free will and accords sign, seal and as their act and did deliver the above Indenture without any coercion or compulsions of their said husbands.

me an Alderman in and for said City personally appeared the witness named Eliza
A. Snodgrass and in due form of law acknowledged the within Indenture to be
their act and deed and desired the same might be recorded as such, and the said
Eliza Snodgrass being of full age and separate and apart from her said husband
by me privately examined and the full contents of the within deed bring by me
first made known unto her did thereupon declare and say that she did voluntarily
and of her own free will and accord sign, seal and as her act and deed deliver
the within Indenture without any coercion or compulsion of her said husband.

voluntary act and deed and the said Rachel being at the same time examined by me
separate and apart from her said husband and the contents of the said instrument
made known to her by me. She then declared that she did voluntarily sign, seal
and acknowledge __ and that she is well satisfied therewith, this 25th day of

This day came the Parties by their Attorneys and this cause came on to be heard upon the Petition, Answer, and Cross Petition, and testimony: And the Court do find that the matters, and things set forth in the said Petition, are not true, and that the matters and things answered, and set forth in the said Answer, and Cross Petition are true: and that the Petition is guilty of gross neglect of duty, and fraud in entering into said marriage contract.
It is therefore adjudged and decreed that the marriage relation, herefore existing between the said parties, be and the same is hereby set aside, and wholly annulled: and the said Parties wholly released from the obligations of the same. And by consent of said Parties, it is further ordered that the said Defendant do pay to the said Plaintiff for her alimony, the sum of One Hundred Dollars, in ten days, from the rising of this Court, and the costs of this suite, and in default, that Execution issue therefor.

Newspaper Articles for William Snodgrass
Friday, Feb. 17th,
William Snodgrass (Crestline Advocate, deaths for the year of 1882).
Died: Snodgrass -At the residence of his son-in-law, John Walker, Friday, Feb. 17th, 1882, William Snodgrass, in the 76th year of his life. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, a very large audience in attendance notwithstanding the rain and gloom. Rev. Laverty preached the sermon, being assisted in the services by Revs. Marcus and Huddleston. (Crestline Advocate Feb. 24, 1882).
Card of Thanks: We, the undersigned, desire in all sincerity to return our most sincere thanks to neighbors, friends, and relatives (of the relatives we mean our brothers, sisters, and their children) who so kindly came to our help in caring for father, and abiding us with their presence and counsel during the last and fatal sickness of our father, Wm. Snodgrass. Hoping and praying that the blessing of God may ever rest and abide with them all. John Walker and Wife.
William Snodgrass, subject of the above articles, s/o William and Margaret Snodgrass of Canton Twp., was laid to rest in Crestline's Greenlawn Cemetery, Richland County, Ohio. He shares a common square stone with several family members, his wife Margaret (Chambers), son William Campbell Snodgrass (the first son he had that was named William, child of Margaret Chambers), and daughter Mary Henderson (Snodgrass) Gates, wife of John Gates. The side facing William's grave (subject), reads -Father & Mother, William Snodgrass died Feb. 17, 1882, Aged 75Y. 1M. 12D. Margaret Chamber wife of Wm. Snodgrass died May 2, 1848, Aged 41Y. 2M. 24D. There is an inscription on the bottom of the stone that is illegible. I visited the cemetery and have photos of the stone.
