Hoyt's History of Wentworth, N.H.

from 1760 to 1861

Peter L. Hoyt

Dr. Peter L. Hoyt, a Dartmouth Medical College graduate in 1837, lived in the small mountain village of Wentworh, N.H. Engaged in his chosen profession for over 30 years, like so many of his peers, he kept a journal. This was a hand written personal adventure of a well educated man, writing of the beginning and progressive growth of a wilderness settlement in New England's northern frontier. However, it wasn't until the bicentennial in 1976, that this remarkable account of an important period in our history was transcribed by Wentworth's historian, Francis A. Muzzey and finally published.

Dear Mr. Muzzey:

Our copy of your Hoyt's History of Wentworth has just come. You are to be congratulated on getting it into print after all these years. I see a great many New England town histories in my work here, and in research for a book I am writing have been intensively using those of Vermont and western New Hampshire. I can tell you this is one of the best. In many ways. Just the remarkable index (you were so right to handle his paging as you did!) Hoyt's "historical ear" seems to me exceptionally true, What a wonderful guy Dr. Peter must have been. -- You may quote the above if it's of any use to you.
