Wonders are expensive, a general pain in the ass, and completely useless. They don't research technologies, they don't produce new units and they don't attack anything. What they do is give you a 100 point bonus at the end of the scenario. Also, to advance to the wonder age and build one is often one of the victory conditions. Other than that, they are just cool to look at.
