Hunt & Hound Series...
These paintings are the result of my
love of the aesthetics of horses and hounds.
They were created from photos I took while watching various hunts.
I normally only do commissioned work,
but I could not resist these images!
The experiment with acrylics is new to me as well.
Inquires about purchasing the originals are welcome.
I would like to have a show when the series is finished.
Meanwhile, all the images are available as my limited edition giclee prints!

acrylic on archival panel, original 12"h x 16w"
Not sure which hound it is who was noticing me instead of watching the huntswoman.
(Image area of giclee limited edition print: 15"wide x 11 1/4"high @$60.)
acrylic on canvas, original 18"h x 24w"
but I couldn't resist playing with the colors some more and trying a gray!
(Image area of giclee limited edition print: 15 1/4"wide x 11 1/2"high @$60.)

during the off season. There were many unusual moments
with the well-behaved 40 or so! I especially loved the face
of Daisy. She was lighter and seemed to get muddier than most.
(Image area of giclee limited edition print: 9 1/2"wide x 7 1/8"high @$40.
Mini print: 5" wide x3 3/4" high @$15. )

Then they watched us alertly, and I loved
Daisy's expression along with the big splash of mud
on her forehead. She is of the American Foxhound type.

even when they were in the pond!
Any canine appreciatior will have a good laugh at the rude group on the left!

the dust it kicked up. Normally the hounds would be
in front of the riders, but you sometimes see them like this if
they are investigating a scent which may have circled back.
I liked the fact that it wasn't a 'formal' moment painted.
The early morning sun and greenish mist were fun to add.

"consulting" with his hounds. His horse seemed to be
listening too! The countryside was near Byron, Illinois.

the Wayne du-Page hunt came to visit. As an local avid
trail rider I knew where to wait with my camera!

The gorgeous white horse on the hill against
the clouds. The vision embodies solitary ageless joy in the hunt.
My technique takes a painting through
many stages of glazing to achieve depth.
(Although in reality it's not so blue.)
(Mill Creek Hunt)
Was exhibited in the Masters of Foxhound Association
Centennial Art Exhibition.
This painting was also selected as a cover for
The Chronicle of the Horse magazine!
oil on linen canvas, original 24"h x 28w"
but still you have to get lucky as the action and lighting are unpredictable.
My first shot had a treebranch in the way...
but then one more stride and they were out into my
field of vision! It was like the hounds were skipping-flying along
as the huntswoman encouraged them to the view!
(Thank you Ms. Laren Hasler, former MFH
of Mill Creek, for this painting's title!)
photo I shot for this painting is featured
as the September page on the national 2006 calendar of
the Masters of Foxhounds! It can be ordered from their website.
Latest favorite in my ongoing quest of
taking good photos to paint from...
the hound kennels. While the adults were out,
I fell in love and poked my camera
through the mesh fence to catch this little one pausing
in her play. Look at that perfect polka dot
on her head! Is she a doll or what!
It was shown in the Masters of Foxhound Association
Centennial Art Exhibition.
Acrylic on archival panel 11x14".
