International

Thai Takeaway - Thai Lanna, Strandvejen 130D, 2900 Hellerup  3940 0400.   Probably the most authentic and delicious Thai food in Denmark.  Only takeaway and catering available.  www.thailanna.dk

Martinne has found a great Pizza place just off Strandvejen in Hellerup/Charlottenlund. Run by Italians, it's simply in a different league from the usual places around Copenhagen, with lots of fresh Italian toppings..   Its really tucked away but once you find it there is no going back:
Costa Smeralda
Strandvejen 323
Charlottenlund    Tel. 39643202  Open: Mon to Sat 11 - 22, Sunday 14 - 22.

Belgians: Den Tatoverede Enke is a Belgian bar and restaurant, located in Boltensgård, 1123 København K  Tel: 3391 8877  A selection of around 70 Belgian beers are available, and they are open Mon - Sat. 16:00 - 01:00   http://www.dentatoveredeenke.dk

La Douane
Toldbodgade 5, Tel: 33 93 14 64
Excellent food at reasonable prices. Hyggeligt surroundings, calm and relaxing.

Cafe Krasnapolsky
Vestergade 10, Tel: 33 32 88 00
Excellent food at reasonable prices.  Somewhat of a trendy place.  Can be noisy and smoky.

Cafe Amsterdam
Don't be fooled by the name, this is a hyggeligt restaurant which serves excellent food at reasonable prices.

Cafe 13
Vasevej 115 Birkerød 3460, Tel: 45 81 99 13
Lori Andersen admits as an American, she loves eating out!  While still not inexpensive, there are a few places that you can have a nice dinner, bottle of wine and a cosy atmosphere for under 500 kr. One of her favorites is Cafe 13. They serve a 3 course meal for under 150 kr. The menu changes each month but features an offering of three choices for each: first course, main course and dessert. There is always a fish selection as well as a vegetarian. She  finds the menu quite simple, yet interesting. She publishes the months' menu in the local area newspapers.

"Se JUICE You" CAFE
Peblinge Dosseringen 4, 2200 København N (on the lakes) Tlf: 35 36 73 73 http://www.sejuiceyou.dk/
Opening hours: Mon - Fri 0700 - 1900, Sat - Sun 1000 - 1900

Coffee Shop - Non smoking - Kafferiet
Esplanaden 44 Tlf: 33 93 93 04
Unbelievable but true a non smoking tiny little cafe near the St Albans church (little Mermaid) and Mærsk's headquarters.

The owner also runs the Kenya Kafe shop on Strandvejen, so I can certainly vouch for the standard of coffee.  I heard about the cafe at a recent Link Tennis Round Robin.  The lady who recommended it said that her husband thought she enjoyed his company so much she was willing to drive him to work every day.  The real reason was this coffee shop!  "The best coffee in town" , she always pops in and orders a take out to enjoy when she gets home.

Fish

Kokken & Havfruen
Peder Skramsgade 15, Tel: 33 14 93 30
Excellent food at reasonable prices. Hyggeligt surroundings, calm and relaxing.

Fish & Chips
Those of us longing for fish and chips or good English style pub food now need to look no further than Gulliver's Pub at Gothersgade 2, 1123 København K (telephone: 3312 6583) where they also sell over 20 varieties of English, Scottish and Irish beer plus a range of ciders and international brews, or Mick and Blodwyns, a quiet little pub with pool table, dart board and comfy leather lounges situated at Herluf Trolles Gade 9, 1052 København K (3315 9308) across from Nyhavn.  Both these pubs have a great atmosphere and are worth a visit, if only for the fish and chips.

Chinese

Fu Hao
Fu Hao, Colbjørnsensgade 15 (corner of Istedgade) behind Main Central Station
Fantastic Chinese food.

Sunday Brunch with the kids

Skovriderkroen
Strandvejen 235, Tel: 39 46 07 00
We enjoyed a Sunday Brunch with our friends at this restaurant near to the sea in Charlottenlund.  Despite having kids under 3 we got to sit at the table and talk.  They have a small children’s room just behind the bar where the kids can play with the others.  The cost is 125 kr for adults and 65kr kids.

Bring your rollerblades/bikes/prams and enjoy the cycle path on Standvejen afterwards.

The five top places for Cakes

La Glace Conditori
Skoubogade 3,  Tel: 33 14 46 46
La Glace is situated in town just off the pedestrian street, Gågaden. This tea and coffee shop has been there since the 19th century and for those that miss afternoon tea or sufficient sugar intake I would make a detour next time you are in town. Amongst the pastries I recommend is the Sportskage (which has got nothing to do with fitness!) it has a crunchy almond base of ´makron´ topped with cream & caramel dipped profiterols. I loved this cake so much I dropped the traditional wedding cake to serve this instead at our reception. Suffice to say I think it’s the best cake in Denmark and my guests did not complain!

Konditoriet ved Royal Copenhagen
Amagertorv 6
Served on the finest porcelain more cakes and tarts with a view of the Copenhagen rooftops

Madam Blå
Dyrehavsbakken, Klampenborg
35 different cakes at Bakken the alternative fun park in town to Tivoli.

Vaffelbageriet
Tivoli
Pancakes, ‘æbleskiver’ a must to try, Belgium waffles etc., just at the side of the Galjen and just across from the Odin Express..  Started in 1906, 5 years after discovering a recipe for Icecream waffles in Berlin.  She had to start with cream as ice cream had at that point not arrived in Copenhagen.

Café Glyptoteket
Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Dantes Plads 7 - situated in the winter garden .
Known for her Cinnamon cakes ‘kanelboller ‘.  Mette Blomsterbeg is both the Danish, Norwegian and European master ‘konditor’ and came in at number 3 in the world championships for new ‘konditorer  1992.

Bakery recommendations

Rene Brød ApS
Det Rosenvængets Alle 17, Tel: 35 43 18 14
Despite the fact it takes us 20mins to get to there its worth it.  Simply try the Ciabatti Flute.

Marie – France Bageri
Værnedamsv. 2, Tel: 33 24 72 46

I am told the Croissants are better than in France.

Non smoking

One Café and Four Restaurants with Non Smoking Sections.

For all those people who woke up on New Years Day determined to stick to their resolution to stop smoking in 2003, here are 5 places you can go to eat without having to endure other people's stale cigarette smoke.

The Café:

Apart from Amokka on Lille Trianglen, Østerbro, Roberts Coffee in the city also has a smoke free area. Roberts Coffee opened in October and lies on the corner of Larsbjørnsstræde and Studiestræde. The entire top floor is reserved for non-smokers, which is particularly nice for Sunday brunch or a sandwich. Unfortunately it is the lower floor/basement (which is also the smoker's area) that is the most pleasant/cosy. There you will find a fireplace and there is live jazz every Thursday. Roberts Coffee is part of a chain that has Coffee shops in Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, with the chain being started 15 years ago (strangely enough) by a guy called Robert.

The Healthy:

Govindas Restaurant is owned by the Hare Krishna sect and is run by volunteers. The atmosphere is different from other restaurants in København, and it almost feels as if you’re taking a small exotic holiday. You serve yourself and are expected to allow others to share your table. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the restaurant, no alcohol is served, and the food is cheap. The menu of the day costs 69 kroner. Lasagna costs 48 kroner and French pancakes cost 29 kroner. The food is vegan, which means it contains no eggs or butter.

The Trendy:

The tapas served at Tapasbaren on Dronningens Tværgade are the real thing: Traditional, northern Spanish, luxurious, warm or cold and the choice is huge. The prices are not exactly cheap, however there is a choice between a smoking and non-smoking section. Usually non-smokers are seated in the basement/lower floor.

The Aromatic:

Predictably enough, the speciality at the Truffle Cafe is truffles. Therefore, to allow you to fully appreciate the delicate aroma and taste of the truffles the whole restaurant is smoke-free. Smokers can catch up on the need for inhaling nicotine at the bar. The prices reflect the fact that truffles are not cheap. The vegetarian dish costs 135 kroner and typically prices are around 195 – 235 kroner. Cheaper meals are available in the cafe, where an omelet with truffles costs 115 kroner and a burger 95 kroner.

The Expensive:

If you are looking for a place to spend all the money you have saved by not smoking then Dining Room is a good option. It is located on the 25th floor of the SAS hotel on Amager, where the view is fairly impressive. The chef, Rasmus Grønbech, trained with Erwin Lauterbach at Saison and he conjures up the most tantalising taste sensations. There is only one menu available; four courses will set you back 455 kroner, five for 525 kroner and six for 585 kroner. The prices for wines are just as high as the restaurant.
