Adopted
by Jack and Dorice McLachlan, she was the third of three adopted siblings
Studied
classical guitar, and piano at the Nova Scotia Royal Conservatory
In
High School she was voted most likely to become a rock star in the yearbook
At
the age of 17, she became involved with a band called October
Game, and was discovered by
Mark Jowett of Nettwerk records. Her parents wouldn't let her sign,
until two years later, at the age of 19. Was signed by Terry McBride as
a solo artist.
First
album Touch was released one
year later in Canada, when she was just 20 years old. It went gold, and
was critically acclaimed
After
completing a long 16 month tour, she released her second album Solace,
which was even more successful. Shortly after it's release, she became the
victim of a stalker named Uwe Vandrei. He sent her threatening letters,
and made some disturbing comments to her in person. Uwe took his own life
after he was unsuccessful in bringing her to court on grounds that she used
his letters as the basis for her song Possession
Fumbling
Towards Ecstasy was released and it went triple platinum,
and it's still growing. This album was more personal and she describes it
as being a "therapy". Fumbling was written in the forests of British
Columbia. She says that being alone with nature had helped her write her
songs, which this time had deeper meaning, unlike earlier in her career,
because, according to her, "...I hadn't yet begun to live..."
In
1995, she released The Freedom Sessions
which included eight songs from Fumbling,
done in different ways. This CD also featured an interactive CD-ROM program
Released
a B-SIDE album in 1996, called Rarities B-Sides
And Other Stuff, which as a compilation of new pieces, works
written by other artists, as well as remixes from her already popular songs
In
1997 she released Surfacing,
which has had hits such as Building A Mystery,
Sweet Surrender, Adia
and Angel from the movie City
of Angels. She describes Surfacing
as "...about me finally growing up and facing the ugly things about myself.
We all have a dark side; it's bullshit to say that we don't"
Married
her drummer, Ash Sood, in Jamaica
1999,
released Mirrorball, a collection
of live songs from her tour of Lillith Fair
