Duncan died in battle. He remained in Scotland even after his death -- until 1630. In the early 1630's he was in France. There he met Ursa, a more simple-minded Immortal. He took Ursa to a monastery. In 1635, he met Amanda and her mentor, Rebecca in France. In 1637, he was in Verona, Italy where he met Hugh Fitzcairn while trying to keep the Prince's daughter's virtue intact. He later "kills" Fitz and the two go off together to learn how to read. In 1653, Duncan is traveling in Algiers where he witnessed the challenge of his Immortal friend by Xavier St. Cloud. His friend tried to avoid the fight so Duncan went in his place only to have his friend show up. The friend and Xavier fought and Xavier won. In 1665, Duncan was nearly burned at the stake for being a witch in England.

In 1781, he visited the Dalai Lama in Lhassa. In England in 1795, he took a student, Jean-Philippe. Jean-Philippe was too cocky and lost his head early on. In 1815, he met Darius while on the battlefield. He joined Darius in Paris but left him about a year later. In 1833, he met an Immortal bounty hunter, Regan Cole, who arrested him for "dallying" with a Duke's wife. In 1842, he traveled through Europe with gypsies. His gypsy loved cursed him when she saw in his palm that he'd never marry anyone, although he promised to marry her.

In 1851, Duncan was in Madrid where he danced Flamenco while learning a new fighting style from Consone. In 1869, Duncan began living with Little Dear's Lakota tribe. In 1872, Little Dear's tribe (including Little Dear) was slaughtered while Duncan was away. The army scout was an Immortal, Kern, who Duncan killed in 1994. Later in the 1870s, he met Carl the Hermit who taught him how to track.

In 1929, Duncan was in New York City where her met and tried to mentor the newly Immortal Johnny Kay. In 1954, Duncan traveled down South to visit Carl, an Immortal and baseball player, when segregation is declared unconstitutional.

In 1980, Duncan was in Paris. While running from the police, he jumped on a tour boat. Here he first met Tessa who was working on the boat at the time. In the early 90's many things occurred in Duncan's life. He lived in Seacouver, running an antique shop with Tessa Noel. It was there that he first met Richie Ryan, a pre-Immortal at the time. Also, reporter Randi McFarland tried to discover Duncan's "secret". He moved with Tessa and Richie from Seacouver to Paris for Tessa's new job where they lived in a barge Duncan bought. They returned in about 1994.

Upon his return, he discovered DeSalvo's Gym, which he bought. Tessa and Richie are killed by a mugger after Duncan rescued Tessa from the Hunter Pallin Wolf. In 1995, he returned to Paris. There he met the "Oldest Immortal". In 1996, he returned to Glennfinnan. Later, he returns to Seacouver with his Watcher, Joe Dawson. In the late 1990s, Duncan split his time between Paris and Seacouver.

By 2005, Duncan was convinced to work as a professor at a university in Washington state by a mortal friend, Blaine Oldfield. There he was put in contact with a pre-Immortal who was one of his students. However, he never knew who was the pre-Immortal among his students. He remained at the university for a decade before moving back to Paris. In 2016, Joe resigned as Duncan's Watcher, citing old age as grounds. Joe, however, remained in contact with Duncan for the next six years. Somehow, the two lost touch after that.

In 2020, Duncan met a pre-Immortal named Leilani Oryema as she toured France with her dance troupe. At the age of 33, Leilani was murdered by an obsessed fan triggering her Immortality. Duncan started training her, but before he can fully explain her existence to her, she left him, feeling she didn't need to be trained. Frustrated by the turn of events, he took a sabbatical and traveled to India, a place he came to respect greatly early in his Immortal life.
