2 down, three to go. passed the workstation with an 850 or so, and an 836 on the server. Thanks to all, the brain dumps that i had were REALLY HELPFUL, i am trying to get one done for the workstation. 70-67 was pretty much as your brain dumps had it. 70-73 had a couple on multi-link and how to configure it (# of phonebook entries). can you run a script to automatically connect via your ISP, how to enable the RAS log if w/s is disconnecting. the PEP exam situations were there. the PEP really helped for the $70 it cost. had the 4-5 on sysdiff by itself. a few on unattended installs, not to many. setup local security, numerous users with sensitive data on the workstation. what 3 things must you have? know that a share only affects users via the network, not locally. know what install types do what. protocol binding order. volume set on a FAT partition (gimme). ETC, thank again. Hi everyone, Just got back from taking the Workstation exam with a smile on my face :-) Got a 901! Going into the exam, I felt less prepared than I did when I took the Server exam, but I got a better score on this exam. Actually, this test was very similar to the Server exam, in that it had a lot of questions on Netware connectivity and RAS. Here's what I remember being on the test: -RAS (particularly multilink questions) -PWS (Gopher, FTP, WWW) -Netware (CSNW, NWlink) Printing options using a Netware Server (on CSNW, you can choose print banner, notify when printed, and Add Form Feed) -Uninstalling Winnt in a Winnt/DOS dual boot -Installing Winnt on a system that has CD-ROM not on Winnt's HCL -In a TCP/IP routed network, what do you need to configure? IP address, -Default Gateway and Subnet Mask........in a NON-routed network, only need to configure IP address and Subnet Mask -Share and NTFS directory and file permissions (I had two questions on this) -Sysdiff, UDF, Unattend.txt Sorry if this info is a bit general, this stuff is just off the top of my head. Only differences were that I had two Proposed Solution-type questions: One about unattended installs and one on optimizing disk resources. Actually, I had about 5 questions overall covering Unattend.txt, UDF files and Sysdiff.exe. My pool of questions had nothing on Performance Monitor, although my instructor told me today that her exam did have questions in that area, so better to be prepared. I think the majority of the Workstation questions will be trivial for you if you studied for the Server exam. The Server exam, in my opinion, was much harder than this one. When I took the Server exam, I didn't have enough time to review all my answers, but on Workstation, I finished with about 20 minutes left to go. A lot of it has to do with the fact that you get more and more used to taking these types of tests. Good luck with your exams and studying. Jeff I just passed the NT 4 wks test. 1. No questions about registry. 2. One question about printing to the HP printer connected directly to the network. 3. Many questions about file security while copying files between partitions 4. Two or three questions about connecting to Netware servers. 5. Passing score is 705 For preparation I used Transcender test, Ressource kit for NT4 wks and New Reiders MCSE Study Guide. I just wanted to let everyone on the list know how I faired on the NT 4.0 WS Exam today. I scored 823/1000 and took a healthy 80 minutes to complete, including a final review of all questions. Test consisted of 51 questions, 705/1000 passing score, and 90 minutes allowed. I used the New Rider's MCSE Study Guide, as well as the STS exam, the 70-73 exam that came with New Rider's, and the MS Assessment for 4.0 exam. I also used a file I downloaded from MS called "Guide to Automated NT Setup" which really helped me out with the unattended/automatic installation questions on the exam (which New Rider's barely touched on, such as sysdiff, /udf, unattend.txt). I'll be glad to send it to anyone who may want a copy. My scoring was as follows: Planning 66% Install/Config 84% Managing Resources 81% Connectivity 77% Running Applications 66% Monitoring and Optimization 100% Troubleshooting 88% I felt slightly let down (albeit still happy) after coming off of scoring a 965 on my 70-58 exam three weeks ago. This exam seemed somewhat more difficult than the Net Ess exam, due mainly to the specific nature of the questions (what button, which icon, etc) and also due to my limited usage of NT WS. Here are a few problems that perplexed me: 1. You have TCP/IP installed and need to send out trap messages to another workstation...what service or protocol do you need to install? a. SNMP b. Network Monitor Agent c. DNS d. RIP e. something else 2. Which takes precedence? System policy or a roaming user profile? 3. Are NTFS file/dir permissions cumulative or do you use the most restrictive? 4. There were 5-6 questions re: unattended/auto installs. The questions were scenario based with the same old "satisfies all objectives, one objective, none" etc. One thing that confused me was that one of the solutions described the unattend.txt file as the one that handled hardware specific information. I thought only the /UDF file (UDB) did that? Anyway, I can't remember any more right now...there were several questions (4-5) on permissions, 3-4 on NTVDM and 16bit apps running in sep memory space, 4-5 Netware questions, etc. The brain dumps that have already been posted were very helpful and should be useful to anyone taking the exam. I am scheduling the 70-67 exam for the 23rd which will be #3 for me. Regards, Tracy I am reposting this as I never saw it originally hit the list Took 70-73 today. I FLEW through the test in 25 minutes!!!! Got a 862, needed 705 to pass. I used SYBEX Study guide mostly, Resource kit as a cross reference, and also referred back to my MOC for NTServer4.0 for info on printing/perf monitor/Dr watson. I found a tremendous amount of info and help from all of the other contributers to this list. Thanks to all, to numerous to name (or remember). 5 down, one more to go!!!! How do you install/upgrade NTW4 on a NTW351 HPFS partition Just came back from taking the exam, my first in pursuit of mcse certification. YES - I passed with a 823, 705 required, and I used almost all the allotted time of 90 minutes. There are several questions very close to those on the Transcender practice exams, however being proficient on those will not necessarily allow you to pass the actual test. I don't know what version of the exam I received, but it didn't seem to coincide with the rather elaborate brain dumps I've seen at various sites. I had 4-5 scenario questions, with the meets all, none, main plus 1 etc. The "windiff" ringer was involved in one of those solutions, and also putting the most used protocol at the bottom of the list in another. Thanks to this list I was aware of these two. I also received the question involving Dr. Watson, which I couldn't resolve. You want to obtain a memory dump of applications area at the time of failure. Your presented two frames (left/right) on the display, on the left Dr.Watson, on the right the start/stop crash dump menu. You are to pick the frame and check box to accomplish this. The key being "application" so it's Dr. Watson, however no matter where in the frame I clicked it left the answer for the question as a circle with a cross in it. I used the comment utility at the end to note my frustration with it. I also inquired with the test administrator, who could not figure it out either. Lots of Netware stuff, printers, and a couple on file/folder perms. I was told this was a difficult exam by people who have taken several so far, and I definitely agree. I actually thought I knew the material better than the score indicates, but it is a pass, and in 3 hours it's Miller time. I've had several people ask me to resend this message (I sent it just as the unsubscribe/subscribe business was happenning) so here goes (sorry if this wastes bandwidth) I passed NT Workstation yesterday with 960. I studied using MCSE Server and Workstation from New Riders, and had a quick look at the Transcender tests. The New Riders book covers just about all the topics, although you'll have to also review the server sections on RAS and Performance Monitor. The book seems to get bogged down with a lot of Registry Keys and meanings, if you're working with NT4 you'll soon learn which are the more common ones, learn a bit about these, and use a reference for the others. The transcender tests are good, worth the money. I'll be buying others especially for the options. I found the actual test substantially easier than transcender's one. On with the Brain Dump 51 Questions, 90 Minutes, 705 Pass: INSTALLATION 1. Know the minimum requirements for NT 4 - 120M Disk, 12M RAM (I386), 16M RAM (RISC), and 486-DX33 [1Q] 2. Learn about unattended installs - what setup.inf, unattended.txt and the UDF files are for, and how SYSDIFF is used. (Don't get this confused with windiff). An excellent recource is Microsoft's Deployment Guide: Automating Windows NT Setups, which can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation. [5Q] 3. Know how to uninstall NT. Boot to DOS, run SYS.COM and remove the NT directory and file. [1Q] ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT 4. Learn about Creating and Deleting accounts, and the audit capabilities in Account Manager. 5. Know when to delete and when to disable an account 6. Know how to rename an account, and when to copy an account, and that the copied account DOES NOT have the same permissions to resources as the original (unless all resource permissioning is done by groups - i.e. how it is in the real world) CONFIGURATION 7. Learn a bit about the registry. If you're using NT in your work environment, what you learn here should suffice for the exam - common keys...Learn about the differences between REGEDT32 and REGEDIT. REGEDT32 allows permissions to be set etc, REGEDIT can search for values. 8. Learn about control panel - What each Applet can do - Know that sound drivers are installed with the Multimedia applet, and which applets to use to install SCSI disks, UPS etc. You should also know which applets are machine specific and which are user specific (I don't think it's tested but it helps th know in real life.) FILE SYSTEMS 9. Learn about file systems - NTFS, FAT & HPFS. NTFS has file level security, and is faster over 400M, but bigger overhead, FAT is compatible with MSDOS & win95. (Note Win95 FAT32 is NOT NT compatible). For upgrading NT3.51 HPFS you must upgrade to NTFS BEFORE upgrading the OS. 10. Learn about Disk Administrator, what the menu items contain, and when you need to Commit Changes. Learn about Volume Sets and Stripe Sets. Know that voulme sets do not improve performance, but stripe sets do. Know that you can expand NTFS volume sets, but not Stripe sets. SECURITY 11. Learn about Permissions both for Shares and Local Access. Permissions are cumulative, except for No Access, which overrides anything. If you have NTFS and Share permissions, add up the cumulative permissions of each, and take the most restrictive of these two. [4Q] 12. Kown what happens when you move files or folders between NTFS partitions, and within them. My rule of thumb is that if a new file is created, it inherets the permissions of the target folder. Copying within a partition - new file - target folder permissions. Moving within a partition - no new file (directory pointers are just updated) : original permissions. Moving across partitions - this is a copy/delete action - new file - target folder permissions. APPLICATION SUPPORT 13. Learn about application support: Default MS-DOS have their own NTVDM - each NTVDM is like it's own DOS computer, single thread and separate memory space. Win16 all share WOW NTVDM - shared memory space, but single thread for each process. 14. Learn how to start WIN16 apps in own NTVDM, and when to do this. Some Apps are unstable, but need to share memory - start these in the default NTVDM, start others in their own NTVDN. If Win16 apps use DDE they do NOT have to share the default NTVDM 15. Learn about Application priorities - LOW, NORMAL, HIGH and REALTIME (admin only). Know about CONTROL PANEL | SYSTEM | PERFORMANCE. 16. Know about starting applications from the command line using /separate, /min, /high etc etc NETWORKING 17. Know how to share a folder, and who can do it - Admins and Power Users 18. Know how to set security on shares. 19. Know how to install networking protocols, TCP/IP, NetBeui and NWLink, and in which environments they should be used. Know that NetBEUI in non-routable. Learn about TCP/IP, that a unique address and the correct subnet mask are needed. Know that to talk to remote computers a default gateway will also be needed. 20. Know that NWLink is Microsoft's version of IPX/SPX Netware Core Protocol, and that this is ALL that is needed for Applications to talk to Netware servers. For File and Print services the workstation must also be running CSNW. Learn about the CSNW applet in control panel - esp. Print Banner, Print Form Feed and Notify When Printed. 21. Learn how to connect to a Netware 3 server with Bindery emulation (Preferred Server in CSNW), and a Netware 4 server using NDS (Default Tree and Context.) 22. Know how to change a password on a netware server - Setpass and CTRL-ALT-DEL PRINTING 23. Know how to set up a printer and document defaults. Know about Microsoft's terminology Print Device is the hunk of metal and plastic, a Printer is basically a concept the print driver as such, Spooler is the driver that does the work. Learn about setting printer priorities and about setting print times. Learn about printer pools, and how to restrict long reports to after hours. 24. Learn about the options in the print folder and print manager - Document Defaults, Server Properites - ports, forms and advanced. TROUBLESHOOTING 25. Learn about the Emergency Repair Process. You CANNOT boot from this disk, you must boot from the three setup disks (regenerate them using WINNT.EXE /OX). The repair process inspects the registry files (and returns them to the state on the repair disk), inspects the startup environment, verify the system files and inspect the boot sector. 26. Have an idea about what sort of errors occur if Boot.ini, NTLDR or the kernal are missing or damaged. 27. Learn about ARC paths 28. Learn about EVENTVWR (event viewer) and that only local administrators can see the security log. 29. Have a working knowledge of Performance Monitor, and know that you can use Task Manager to see the processor utilization. There are probably more, and I'll post them if I remember them. Thank you to all on the list that have taken time to give advice and tips. My major piece of advice is to have a good play with NT4, get familiar with the UI and with what is available in each of the menus etc. Got a 921 so that means I missed 4 questions. I had 14 questions marked then changed 5 of those when I reread the question carefully so I was pleasantly surprised to see I only missed 4. Perhaps someone can shed more light on some of the questions below. Brain Dump: 1. What Control Panel applet is used to configure modems? a. Modem applet. b. Devices applet. c. Services applet. d. Adapter in network applet. I guessed d. Wrong-o. 2. You are installing NT and testing the monitor type and the screen goes black. When you reboot you are put back into the Monitor Type selection screen. What is the problem? a. Refresh rate. b. Resolution. c. Monitor Type. d. Color Depth. I choose c cause abd may have blacked my screen but never caused a crash. 3. What two things do you need to print to TCPIP printer on network? a. Hostname + IP. b. Hostname + netmask. c. IP + printer name. d. Printer name + hostname. I guessed c. Does anyone know? 4. What protocol/service do you need to send TCPIP trap messages to another computer? a. SNMP b. Simple TCPIP Services. c. NWlink d. Network Monitor Agent I guessed a. Anyone know and why? 5. You are installling NT from CD. After first reboot while trying to install a driver you get the following error message: "CopySingleFile: blah blah blah non-critical error could not copy file whatever.drv." What is the problem? a. Your hard drive failed. b. The file already exists on the hd. c. The CDROM is not compatible with NT. d. The hard drive has conflicting interupts with another device. I guessed c since I supposed NT was loaded on reboot. Other Questions: (Can someone answer these also?) Do you need Network Monitor Agent to monitor Ethenet packet statistics? "Streams Environment" kept popping up as an answer. Does it exist? What is it's purpose? Can you connect to Netware 4.1 as a bindery server or not? Thanks, and hopes this helps others be prepared for some of MS tricky questions. Passed NTW 4.0 yesterday with 901. I found the test hard, took the full = 1hr and 30 minutes to complete the test. There were questions on the = following areas: moving NTFS files to another NTFS partition as well as to another NTW = NTFS computer. Changing from workgroup to domain from your NTW to map a drive on the = NTS 4.0, how do you do it? Multilink question with and without call back security. 5 question on unattended, UDF and Sysdiff, in the form of Required, = optional and proposed solution. Then you pick if the proposed solution = meet all or some of the required and optional requirements. They tried = to slip in Windiff.exe instead of Sysdiff.exe, thanks to the list I = caught that question. These type of questions really make you think. I = left those to the end and I answered all the easier ones first. In the most of the questions, Microsoft tries to confuse you with a lot = of details that are not important, I tried to pick out the details that = were important to the answers given in the question.=20 3-4 questions on permission on NTFS files and folder and FAT shares. = Most restrictive and least restrictive. A few with answers No access!=20 Question on DLC for HP printers 2 questions on changing partition from NTFS to FAT and FAT to NTFS. Hi Ruth, good luck on your exam. I found the NT WS 4.0 to be straight forward (no tricks). If you've gone through the basics then I would make sure and review the following: 1. Share permissions vs. NTFS directory permissions vs. NTFS file permissions. 2. Files and exe's used when mass installing NT WS 4.0. 3. Memorize all those "cute" applets (sp?) in the control panel and note that Microsoft will sometimes refer to them as "control panel". i.e. go the modems control panel (vs. applet). Also know what options you have once you double click on an applet. 4. Know the difference between regedit and regedit32. 5. Know about Volumes and Stripe sets (stripe without parity, i.e. no fault tolerance), and the issues about FAT vs. NTFS and when and why you would select one over the other. 6. Relax, breath deeply, and remember...you know what you know, anything on the exam you don't know will become something you do know. When I took my exam I marked off those questions I wasn't completely sure about, took my best guess, and continued. Then at the end I counted up those marked questions, and since there were only about 8 I figured there was nothing to worry about. I took the NT WS 4 exam today and passed it with score 901. Exam pass mark: 705; No of Qs: 51 Time allocated: 90' (120' for countries whose first language is not English) Here's what was on it: - several TCP/IP Qs: nothing very difficult (DHCP, Wins, DNS, TCP/IP parameters etc) - three four Qs involving unattend.txt/UDFs: nothing difficult (you need to know what each one does) - know sysdiff.exe and what we use it for and how we use it (windiff.exe the NT 3.51 RK utility was mentioned twice - always wrong) - four five Qs about printing (TCP/IP, HP Nic printers) - Upgrading from Win95 to NT 4 (know the issues - what can't be done; alternative solutions) - a couple of profile Qs and how they work (and that dreaded Roaming user profiles vs Policies: which one wins? or a combination?) - a bit about disk admin and performance of stripe sets - group admin and permissions (multiple scenario Qs and normal Qs) - a couple Qs about troubleshooting (bootdisk) - how you configure Dr Watson to generate application crash dumps. - about five Qs on performance monitor (excessive paging, using with respect to SNMP traps, Network Monitor agent) - some easy staff about NwLink and CSNW (and what you can do with it) - know that NDS is supported - one Q about regedt32 vs regedit (which one allows you to search branches for values?) - one Q about Multilink with CallBack (not working with multiple phone lines) That's all I can remember.. BTW, nothing on x.500 naming or PPTP (although it was mentioned as a possible reply to some Qs) and no complicated UDF/unattend.txt Qs. Overall, I was expecting something a lot worse... And what is the Streams Environment? It was mentioned in almost all the Network Monitor Qs... Thanks to the list for all their assistance. David Exam 70-73: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Here is almost full list of questions, which I had. I Hope, this will help you. Our company used the Logical Operations "overview" course, then a "personalized" review session led by our Asst Dir, who's one shy of his MCSE. We used handouts from MS' Web site, reviewed the Logical Opns course book (NB this is not designed to prepare you for the test), and our AD created sample questions and we used the PEP and MS 3.51 assessment exams from the MS site as review tools. Also made good use of lost sleep time to study. BTW, this is going out at 1:43 AM, EST, so lost sleep mode is still functioning <grin>. 51 questions, 705 to pass. All credit to the MARK and review feature - don't be shy about going back to answer a question. I ended up with 16 ?? that just didn't make sense on the first pass. Rather than spend more time than necessary on one, MARK it and go on. Otherwise I would have gone nuts. 2 questions on RAS - one from the Server side, using 3 modems and Multilink/Callback and what happens when you call in - will it work, do the modems call back, etc., can you configure it. The other ? about calling out using ISDN lines, 2 B-channels and how RAS is configured to do that, with regard to phonebook entries. A question about permissions and permission sets for shared folders with the example being local users having what perms., and the remote users having what perms. on a shared folder. Another perms question about a user in 2 separate groups and his perms on a file - not a shared folder file. Also a question about cumulative perms on a file - No Access was the answer. 2 or 3 about automated installs, sysdiff, /udf and so forth - One of these was a "what files do you need to do such and such", along with 2 questions about different types of systems, how many files you need to create to get the same apps. One of these was a "meets/doesn't meet goals" thing. A question about installing NT, without a NIC, how do you do it so you can install it later - Install, then remove a NIC, MS Loopback and a generic NE2000 NIC were mentioned as possible responses. Installing NT on a 386/33 with lots of memory. NT on a DOS box with a CD-ROM not in the HCL - what do you do - Run it anyway, copy files to a network drive (the system wasn't noted as having a network connection), using the install disks to boot and let them figure it out? A "does it meet goals" ? about a system w/4 2 gig SCSI drives (FAT files all), the page file on the boot partition, 1-10 meg graphics files on the same thing, and how to optimize for quick response of the page file and graphics, etc. Did the offered solution meet all, some of the goals? How to put the path of an app into a user's environment? Put it in REG.DAT, the user's environment variable, AUTOEXEC.NT or CONFIG.NT? Changing a user name to allow the new user to use the old fired/quit user's files. Disabling an account for someone who will be gone for awhile. Creating separate accounts with specific home dirs, for users who want to manage the security of their own files - this was on an NTFS partition. A question about auto setting the IP address pointed toward DHCP What protocol needed to use a Macintosh printer - I answered AppleTalk, simply because I had no clue. How to change from DOMAIN1 to DOMAIN2 - reinstall NT, a couple of other song and dances, or use the Identification tab in Network in Control Panel. Might have been a reference to a Server Manager here, too, as a possible. Where to set up MIDI driver stuff - which Control Panel icon. I don't recall which I chose, but I think it was multimedia. Should have been something else, I'm sure. A question about how to set up a UPS - 2 part answer - where to connect the UPS (ser port w/appropriate cabling), and UPS icon in CP to configure. A question or two regarding Client for Netware Services - connecting to a NW box was one, can't recall the other. Setting a system policy to hide the Shutdown option on the Ctrl-Alt-Del Task Mgr - why doesn't it work for threes users in a group? I answered it because they have specific individual policies for their accounts. How to lock a workstation after you're gone for 15 minutes - I used the pwd protected screensaver How to schedule long print jobs after regular business hours - create 2 printers, one with time set for those hours How to map to a server called Sales, with a folder called Reports, over the Internet. Domain is sales.future.com (or something). I think I chose www.s.f.c/reports. ftp.s.c/reports, was an option, so was \\sales.f.c\reports. I obviously had no clue A question about performance - how to increase after looking at Perf Monitor - I chose add RAM, other option was increase pagefile, do some other things that were looney How to view processes - Perf Montior and Task Manager were the 2 answers I chose. Make an all FAT system a DOS boot only, and get rid of NT - Rollback was a choice. I used run SYS.COM, then delete all the NT stuff. They asked the ping question - ping the component farthest away that will show the others in the "path" are working. Guy's and Gal's, As I mentioned in a brief post yesterday I past NT WK 4.0. (and I can't tell you how happy this makes me!) This was the second time I took the test (the first time was a week ago today. As I took the test twice in a short period of time, perhaps I can offer a few unique observations. 1. Unattended installs: Basically the same question showed up on both tests. The question was an objective / solution format format. There were required and optional results offered. Since there seems to be no real definitive authority on the subject of unattended installs these questions were nail biters for me, but the questions were not real difficult, nor did they require more then a superficial understanding of the basic functions. Although my best information came from people on this list. The question started out with "your installing NT on X number of desktop computers and X number of laptop computers." This was my cue to look for answers that included using more then one answer file. From what I was able to get out of the NT Resource kit there are 6 sections that can only be addressed in the answer file. they are: 1. Unattended 2. OEMBootFiles 3. MassStorageDevices 4. KeyboardDrivers 5. PointingDeviceDrivers 6. DetectedMassStorage It seemed to me that by saying you were installing in a lap top and a desktop the point of different hardware setting would be hard to miss. After that the optional results had to do with installing applications which was my cue to look for solutions that required the sysdiff utility. I did well on both tests in this area. 2. TCP/IP Basic questions like what three parameters must you configure to connect to a host in a routed environment, or what service must be running on the domain server. Not too difficult but I'll admit, "connectivity" was a test area that I did poorly on both times (55% and 66% respectively) so I need to look at this area again for my own sake. 3. Printing 4 or 5 questions each about configuration and trouble shooting. I know I got a question wrong the first time because I did not know the difference between resume and restart. 4. Running applications I got help with this right here in the list. The same question cam up on each test, but with a twist. The first time you had three Win 16 apps that supported OLE and DDE, you were asked to select the configuration that would allow them to share information, with the least amount of interference to other win 16 apps. The 2nd time same question only the win 16 apps supported shared memory for information exchange. (I went from 66% to 100% in this category) So I guess the moral of the story is know the difference. 5 . A few questions on NetWare support. what you can do, how to do it. One thing that helped me was knowing that NWLink is automatically installed with CSNW (again the list to the rescue!) 6. Configuring RAS A number of questions both times and I don't think I did too well. One was configuring two ISDN lines. How that would be configured in the phone book. (I've got to look that up.) Some questions about multilink Call back and troubleshooting. 7. Performance tuning. Same kind of experience as with the unattended install. same scenario both times, different solutions offered. The dead give away for me was understanding the difference between a volume set and a strip set. and the knowing about setting the binding order to improve network performance. (I got 100% in this category both times :) 8. Know the difference between Regedit.exe and regedt32.exe 9. Permissions - A number of questions on both times, I did well in this area the second time (Thanks to Herb!). they give you a grid (it was different on each test) Across the top columns are listed Share, Directory, and file On the side they listed various groups that our hero was a member and permissions that each group had for the share, the directory and the files. Then you asked to give the effective permission for the files. For me I just keep on rule in mind. Like permission groups are cumulative and different groups are most restrictive. So I went down the share column and determined the effective permission, same for the directory and then the file. So I'm thinking in terms of single permissions for each level. from there your down to a much simpler question. 10. System polices and Server Questions Both times there were questions that I thought had know business being on the Workstation exam. After I failed the first time I read the whole section on the server in the New Rider study guide about the server and read up on the system policy editor and primary domain controllers and such. Heck the system policy editor isn't even included in the workstation product, so I did not have an opportunity to explore it in any depth. Frankly I saw nothing on the MS Preparation guide that would suggest any of it would be included on the workstation exam, well live and learn. 11 and the rest Two or three UPS questions, when to use the Rdisk and when to use lastKnowGood. Know that too much paging to hard disk is your cue to add RAM, and why you should not put the pagefile on the boot sector if you can help it. Well I hope it helps! Oh, and because so many of you have asked: A "quick Hank Snow" is an obscure southern idiom referring to the title of Hank Snows major hit record "Moving on". For one to say "Time to Pull a quick Hank Snow" is to say "I gotta be moving on, and how." Ask your rockabilly friends Hello All! I want to extend my thanks to everyone on this list for your thoughts, advice and suggestions. A week ago, I passed my first certification exam, Windows NT Workstation 3.51 with an 858 and this past Friday, I passed my second exam, NT Server 3.51 with a 933. I'm on my way to becoming an MCSE! Since a couple of people have posted requests for advice on the Server exam, I've listed some things that seemed especially important or surprised me on the exam. This list is not intended to be all-encompassing. In my opinion, the best resource for an complete list of test topics can be found on the Microsoft Roadmap CD. If you know all the topics on the list, you'll do fine on the exam. Also, take the assessment - I had questions from the assessment on my exam! 1) Know your RAS! Know supported RAS dial-in and dial-out clients for both PPP and SLIP (Server is not supported as a SLIP dial-in). RAS security features were covered on the exam, especially encryption. Know that RAS has the ability to function as a NetBIOS gateway and know when it should be implemented as one. Know what protocols are supported under RAS. Know when to use MODEM.INF and know how to configure RAS logging (DEVICE.LOG) 2) Printing: Know the difference between create and connect. Understand what protocols are necessary in different network configurations and different platforms. On some of these questions, I actually drew out a diagram. Also know how to set up printer drivers. Know UNIX printing, HP, TCP/IP. Know how to set up a printer poola and add a printer to a printer pool. 2)Client support: On my exam I had a couple of questions on Windows for Workgroups - know how a WFW machine logs on to a domain. Understand client installations over a network. You need to know how to use the Network Client Administrator and which client software is provided with Server. Know the capabilities of the full redirector vs. the basic redirector. 3)Netware: Know that a slow network connection could be due to the wrong frame type. Know the difference between GSNW and CSNW. Know how to designate a preferred server and when it is necessary to configure an internal network number. Know how to configure GSNW. 6)Domains and Trusts: Expect lots of questions on these. I found that most of the basic trust questions were very straightforward if you knew the material - no tricks here. Know the four domain models and under what conditions each is used. Know that trusts are not transitive. Understand how Global groups and local groups work in a domain. Expect some questions that combine these concepts with permissions (this is where they get tricky). Map out diagrams of the questions. 7)Groups and permissions: Know what rights each of the built-in groups have. Understand how permissions on a file change when it is copied or moved. Know that when a user has both share and resource permissions, the most restrictive permissions take precedence (Local and group permissions are cumalitive) And again, understand Global and local groups. D.J. Keleman posted a mnemonic that I really liked. U.G.L.R. (Uglier): Users go into Global groups, Global groups go into Local groups and Local groups access Resources. 8)Disk resources: I had some real toughies here. Of course, know what happens to file permissions when moving files to FAT, HPFS and NTFS partitions. Understand fault tolerance. Know disk mirroring and duplexing, disk striping with and w/out parity and volume sets. Remember that when configuring disk striping, the largest possible volume is not necessarily going to use all the available free space (you may need to use three disks instead of the available four) When implementing a stripe set with parity, the usable amount of disk space is smaller than the total amount, since one disk must be used for the parity information (I believe this is why you need three disks for stiping with parity and only two are required for striping w/out parity - is this correct? Anybody know?) 9) Understand when to use the ERD and Last Known Good. Know what these can and cannot do. Know the ins and outs of using Rdisk. Know how to create an NT boot disk and when to use it. Also know NT backup and how the Registry can be backed up. 10)UPS:It needs special cabling. It uses a com port (serial). Interface voltages need to be configured positive or negative. 11)Networking: Know the various protocols and when they should be used. For TCP/IP, understand the basics of DHCP, WINS, HOSTS and LMHOSTS. 12)Macintoshes: They need the NTFS file system installed on each server they access. Know the basics of Services for Macintosh, file access, printing, etc. Know the difference between Localtalk and Appletalk. 13) ARC naming conventions and boot.ini - know and understand these. I had questions on this topic on both exams! Hi All, I took the exam this morning and just wanted to let you know what kind of questions came up. A lot of questions ~ 35 out of 162 on installing Workstation - make sure you know about UDF files, unattended.txt and that registry import/export tool sysint.exe (Or something can't remember the name of it at the mo') One nasty scenario question on the above you, want to automate the installation of NT on 20 laptops and 30 desktops, and also install some software and join a domain, how can you automate this. Lots more questions like this. A couple of questions on Mulilink modems (kinda weird didn't think they were in Wrkstation). ~12 questions on Netware, a couple of nasty NW 4 context setting q's ~3 q's on Point-to-point Tunneling protocol ~a couple of q's on PeerWeb services What really struck me was the almost total lack of File System questions - I was expecting a lot more. Other than that the exam seemed very similar to the 3.51 exam. I'd finished in 2 hours. Ed Well, I took the NTW 4.0 Beta yesterday and was quite surprised at the number of questions that were actually 4.0 specific. For instance, the number of questions about the System Policy Editor and Multilink - both of which I've never used. I was also surprised at the greater depth of the Netware questions - a total change from the NTW 3.51 test. And I was definitely not ready for the unattended setup questions. Before taking the Beta test, I took the 4.0 assessment exam on MS' website. It was not a good example of the Beta. It wasn't even close. The questions were so simplistic that it would lead someone to believe that the actual exams are not that hard. Is this a promotional effort by MS or what? Ok, here's a quick memory dump of what I remember from the NT 4.0 WS Beta Test: Several questions on multi-link RAS, both setting up dial-out using multi-link and setting server call back. Several Netware integration questions. Client service for Netware questions, both working with 4.x and 3.1x servers. Some questions about logging in to Netware directory trees, etc. Also printing and file access to Netware (how to map drives and info on print banners, etc.) Several TCP/IP questions. Fairly basic info on configuring IP. (What you use WINS and DNS for, what parameters have to be set for IP to work right, what happens if you have duplicate addresses, etc.) Several security questions (file, directory, share permissions, and logon security). A few disk configuration questions (how and why to set up stripe sets, how much stripe space can you get out of a given amount of free space on x number of drives, when (or if) to use volume sets). Several upgrade questions, from WFW, 95, NT 3.51, and OS/2. (What desktop setting can you migrate and what will not migrate). Several automated setup questions. How to use unattend.txt, UDF files, sysdiff.exe, etc. A question or two about starting tasks at different priorities, a question or two about tape backup and installing tape drivers, a few questions on configuring dump files for the system and for Dr. Watson. One or two questions about talking to HP printers and Unix servers. (Protocols to use.) One or two questions about how to uninstall NT or revert a system back to DOS. A couple of printing questions. (How to set up printers to serve various OSs: 95, NT 3.51, NT 4.0. How to bypass downloading print drivers (?), what's needed to set up LPR printers, how to reset a failed print job.) Hope this helps! I didn't think the test was too hard. I did have some trouble with the Netware integration and the automated install stuff because I haven't used it, but all in all I think I did ok. Thanks to those who posted earlier today on what they remembered! It really helped me!
