~For You, Lee Ann~

THE MOST important aspect concerning an artist's work being collected is that it be given a place of honor and careful regard. How does someone––or we as a society––place a monetary value on fine art? It is exceedingly difficult, at best. Most artists feel deeply that their highest creative achievements are inherently invaluable; in part because it represents a quintessential facet of their beings which they like to believe could never be bought or sold. I still have yet to part with very much of my abstract work; probably because I have had intimate contact with so few individuals who possess the kind of intuitive powers and culturally diverse backgrounds the earnest collector can commandeer. And yet I am not at all discouraged by this, for I understand and accept that the art object possessing unusually high levels of aesthetic authenticity and cultural import will seldom be easily appreciated nor thoroughly understood; and, at the risk of sounding aloof and deliberately contrary, I actually prefer it this way, because it convinces me that when someone truly does gain a sense of its intrinsic––or, dare I say, even spiritual value, and is drawn to it to the degree they desire to have it become their own––that it has truly been discovered.

When someone reaches a level of palpable infatuation about my paintings, they pay me a high honor; as these works spring from my deepest emotions and most complex art–historical ideas. You, my Noggs, have unquestionably made an everlasting impression on me, and I cannot think of a more appropriate person to have entrusted these works to; for although they shall belong to you for as long as you wish to have them, so shall they always remain a small yet intricate part of my own creative legacy. They belong to you, and I know in my heart you will give them a proper place and care for them as though they sprang up by your own hand.

My friend, I am not at all sure what the future holds in-store for me and my art–making. However, I shall carry with me always the knowledge that some of my most treasured creations brought about real pleasure and joy––as well as a bit of contagious excitement––into the life of someone for whom I hold genuine admiration and concern.

By having my work as your own, you will forever keep a part of me. And, by your collecting these modern “artifacts,” you generously give a part of yourself in return. I'm so grateful we could share these artworks, as well as the experience of doing so....
