SOLUTIONS

Remedial Measures

1) Regular  harvesting of algae to remove the nutrients.

2) Stocking the lake with Major Carps & larvivorous fish to reduce mosquito menace (Kodarkar 1995).

3) Use of towable islands of Eichhornia species (Water hyacinth) for the removal of nutrients, pesticides, heavy metals & other pollutants (Wulverton,1976).

4) Desilting the Ganesh immersion sites a month after the conclusion of the festival.

5) Whenever there are good monsoon rains lake water should be released to remove bottom stagnation.

6) Due to tough intra & inter species competition for food & space in the lake, removal of small low value fishes is suggested to allow more food & space for the proper growth of more desired species. This does not mean complete removal of weed fishes, but aim should be to maintain a balanced population level which permits a large & stable population which the water can support. (Singh Kohli, 1995).

7) Large scale deforestation along the catchment areas and improper land use lead to soil erosion resulting in siltation of water courses. Hence these activities should be minimised.

8) Educating & creating awareness of the limited resources of fresh water & need for the protection & conservation of this essential natural resource among the common man.

9) The continous monitoring of environmental parameters will help us in knowing the extent and exact cause of deterioration, by which we can take an immediate action to stop it.
