JOCASTA

No Coincidence

EPIC 4878612

A London-based quartet fronted by Tim Arnold, the 21-year-old son of '60s starlet Polly Perkins, Jocasta are a precocious new talent who, rather worryingly, first bonded over a love for literature and the collective works of Mike Oldfield. Accordingly, this is a highly impressive debut whose breadth of vision suggests an ambition not easily sated, and the mixture of searing power pop, swooning serenades and swelling string sections is often magnificent. Go is an adrenaline-fuelled colossus, while Life In A Day is an intelligent romantic ballad that doesn't rely on "I love you" epithets. Although a little too self-conscious at times (the dreary Actress is a lame attempt at a Lennon-like lullaby), this nevertheless confirms Jocasta as a name to watch. ***
