Rastafari(anism) is not only a "religion" but a way of life wich was founded in the thirties by a group of Garveyites, followers of Marcus Garvey's "back to Africa" theory (i.e. "Marcus Garvey biography") ,in Jamaica.It is referred to as some as a mix of the purest forms of christianity and judaism, wich is somewhat evident in its philosiphy. We Believe H.I.M. Haile Selassie I, Lion of the conquering tribe of judah, is an avatar (God on earth in human form)the name rastafari comes from Haile sellasie's name before he became king, Ras ,meaning Prince,and Tafari Makonnen,being his name.Rastafari is a way of life that teaches Inity(unity) and love among all. A vital part of rastafari belief's is repatriation, or "back to africa" as marcus garvey taught. We believe in the divinity of selassie because of the verse above, revelations 22, and many other references. The reason the verse above is significant is because some of the titles of Selassie were "Root of david" and "lion of the conquering tribe of judah". He was also a direct descendant of King David of isreal (wich is related to isaiah 9:6-7). But Rastafarianism isnt all about peace. Rasta is about JUSTICE, and the freedom of black people , and opressed people, worldwide, it is about the freedom from mental slavery, the freedom from economic slavery, and about freeing africa from babylon's rule.
