THE ENGINE / PROPELLER PERFORMANCE SUMMARY BELOW IS BASED, IN PART, UPON THE EXCELLENT ON-LINE PROPELLER SIZE ANALYSIS PROGRAM AVAILABLE AT PropWorks.COM. AT THE TIME I ANALYZED NEREID V'S PERFORMANCE THIS SERVICE WAS PROVIDED FOR FREE, I NOTE THAT THEY CHARGE FOR THESE ANALYSES NOW.

NOTES

  1. Engine output includes 3% loss for the reverse/reduction gear.

  2. Fuel consumption is estimated based upon 5.6 gph per 100 engine hp. Thus this data is only approximate, Caterpillar data sheets give fuel consumption as follows for a 3208 NA, 11.9 gph at 2800 rpm, 7.0 gph at 2400 rpm, and 3.2 gph at 1800 rpm. This Caterpillar fuel consumption data assumes a propeller matched to the 210 hp rating at 2800 rpm and that the engine output (hp) varies with the cube of engine speed (a typical propeller characteristic.)

  3. All data is for one of two engines.

  4. Reduction gear ratio is 2.47:1

  5. Propeller is 26 inch diameter by 23 inch pitch, four blade, uncupped, bronze.

  6. Engine output is assumed to vary with the cube of engine speed (a typical propeller characteristic.)

  7. Bollard pull(static thrust) is estimated and assumed to vary with the square of engine speed.
