NBC, ABC have something to be thankful for in sweeps
Yet NBC has avoided disaster because of the unexpected strength of its
returning shows.
``Law and Order'' had its best sweeps month ratings in the show's
11-year history in November. Last week's show, about a politician's
criminally inclined son, was the most-watched ever among adults ages
25-54, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.
``The West Wing'' is up 47 percent in its sophomore season, with last
week's show the second most-watched ever. Viewership for ``ER'' is up 7
percent this year, and ``Frasier,'' despite a move from NBC's popular
Thursday night schedule to Tuesday, is up 15 percent.
As a result, NBC was the only one of the top four networks to record an
increase in viewership this November compared to last year. Sweeps month
ratings are watched closely to set advertising rates.
ABC was expected to dominate November sweeps. Instead, the race was
extraordinarily tight: ABC won the prime-time viewership competition by
only 100,000 people over the full month, and NBC won in household ratings
by one-tenth of a ratings point.
Last week, ABC led in prime-time with 13.6 million viewers on average
(9.1 rating, 14 share), NBC had 11.9 million (8.2, 13), CBS had 11.8
million (8.3, 13) and Fox had 9.6 million (5.9, 9).
UPN had 4.4 million viewers (3.0 rating, 5 share), the WB had 4.1
million (2.9, 4) and Pax TV had 1.4 million (1.0, 2).
NBC's ``Nightly News'' won the evening news ratings race for the week
with 11.2 million viewers (8.2 rating, 15 share). ABC's ``World News
Tonight'' had 10.3 million viewers (7.8, 15), and the ``CBS Evening News''
had 9.1 million (6.8, 12).
