Letter from NND President
Dan Leman

wpe3.jpg (6110 bytes)

(This letter was e-mailed to members and is being reprinted to ensure
all NND members and friends get it straight from the "horses mouth")

Greetings from the desk of the President! Actually, that should be greetings from the desk of the secretary—as I’m filling in for Deb today while she is on vacation.

As NND approaches its first anniversary, I would like to thank all those involved in helping to get NND organized and off to a great start as part of the Ninilchik community. This has been an exciting and invigorating first year filled with the usual trials and tribulations of any new organization. NND has had a busy first year and we are looking forward to meeting the challenges of what the new year will bring. It has been great to see some of the renewed interest about Ninilchik Village and the people and their culture. NND is working hard to see that our history will be preserved and to keep that interest alive.

Some of the activities that we’ve been involved in include;

The many fun and entertaining elders gatherings
The educational fishery
The various fundraisers including the July 4th dance and the garage sales
The infamous spruce cone collection party
The new and improved Land Access Permits for moose hunting
Aleut-style basket weaving class
The Christmas Bazaar
And the Second Alutiiq Elders and Youth Gathering in Kodiak

And that’s just the beginning——what a great year we have to look forward to!

On behalf of the board of directors for NND I would like to thank all the members and their families for a great first year and what I hope are many more to come. If you have any ideas or suggestions to help make NND the best organization possible, please let us know.

I hope everyone had a great winter and hang in there because its almost over. Soon we’ll be fishing and there have already been sightings of the first clam diggers.

Best wishes,
Dan Leman

Are you ready for all the tourists?

 blu.gif (2492 bytes)

You know you're from Alaska (Ninilchik?) when:

You only own four spices: salt, pepper, ketchup, and Tabasco.

You design your Halloween costumes to fit over a snowsuit.
The mosquitoes have landing lights.
You have 10 favorite recipes for moose meat.

You thought "Grumpy Old Men" was a documentary.
You've taken your kids trick-or-treating in a blizzard.
Driving is better in the winter because the potholes get filled with
snow.
You think everyone from the city has an accent.

At least twice a year, the kitchen doubles as a meat processing plant.
The most effective mosquito repellent is a shotgun.
You think the start of moose season is a national holiday.
You frequently clean grease off your barbecue so the bears won't prowl
on your deck.
You know which leaves make good toilet paper.

You find -60 degrees a might chilly.
The trunk of your car doubles as a deep freeze.

Shoveling the driveway constitutes a great upper body workout.
You know the 4 seasons: Winter, Still Winter, Almost Winter, and Construction.
You actually "get" these jokes, and forward them to all your Alaskan friends.

Looking for a Way
To Pay For Itself

We get lots of comments on the importance of the newsletter. The Willage News has become our link to members and friends, letting you know what’s happening and giving you an opportunity to voice your concerns. Due to a high distribution (approximately 350 copies each mailing!) the newsletter is one of our highest budget items. Therefore, we’re always looking for a way to cut costs. In our April issue, we will begin running ads from businesses to help cover costs. If you’re interested in advertising your business, call the NND office no later than April 1, 1999, for rates and available space.
