March 1999 Volume 2/Issue 2 ASK AN ELDER! "Ask an elder" is scheduled to be a regular feature in Willage News. In the future, board member Joann Jackinsky will coordinate it. If you have questions, you can phone, write, or e-mail them to Joann at the NND Office. To kick it off well tackle the hot topic of this months elders gathering. On Monday, March 8, Elder and NND board member Edna Steik hosted the get-together at her home, treating everyone to some of her delicious cooking. Anytime you get our elders together, be assured that whatever topic comes up, itll be interesting. Who would have guessed the conversation of the day would focus on GARBAGE! More to the point, the lack of garbage in Ninilchik Village. According to our elders, everything had a purpose and nothing was wasted. When it came to moose, everything was eaten except the skin and hooves. Jars were reused. Paper was burned. And once catalogs had been ordered from, they were "stored" in the nooshnik. Ninilchik was recycling before there was a name for it. It wasnt a throw-away society. It was a saving society. Think of that when you haul your bags of garbage to the dumpster or set your trash cans out to be picked up and emptied. Are we still a "saving society"? Or is there something we can learn from the example they set?

With spring just around the corner, drivers are tempted to increase their speed and let down their guard. Remember to keep your eyes on the road ahead, your speed under the limit, and look out for the moose!
