You'll soon quit using his pitching card as it doesnt win. In real life a manager is stuck with the WHOLE ballplayer. You cant just use his good parts. Medical science cant lengthen the season to add more wins to a season like it can add more wins to a career.(make sure you go back to previous page and how Houston Astrodome 1981 was the MOST BIASED PRO-PITCHING STADIUM IN BASEBALL HISTORY. In 1968 his record was a mediocre 13-14 yet his ERA was a sparkling 2.05" My comment: OH, HOGWASH!!!! Note that its that crazy year 1968 again when the pitchers stats were BLOATED as everything was biased pro-pitcher that year. That was the year Gibson had a 22-9 1.12 in the same league. Veales was twice as high so its no surprise he won half as many games. Dont forget that EVERY pitchers ERA was helped the same amount including the opposing pitchers in each game.. And VEALE said, "When I pitched in the middle and late 60s it SEEMED that th National League was loaded with great pitchers." Yes, it "SEEMED" that way as the game from 1963 through 1968 was biased towards pitchers. Just like Ryan's stadiums were biased towards pitchers. These web people who state that Ryan is the GREATEST pitcher of all time are very careful to never put his year by year record against any other pitcher. They can ONLY promote him via lifting him out and keeping him AWAY from all the other pitchers and only pointing out his rare good points and avoiding his many bad ones. They also seem to think that baseball innings are like BOWLING INNINGS!! In BOWLING you get two balls per inning PERIOD. They act like in baseball you get three HITTERS and ONLY three hitters per inning, period, and that if you strikeout all three hitters its like two gutter balls and nothing happened. In fact you can get all three outs via three strikeouts and yet have the lineup bat around ten times and hit dozens of homeruns between those three Ks.. ..... ..... Oct 25, monday.. ... The Ryan fans are always whining about his so-called "lack of support" which I and the SABR guys have already disproved on these pages. But here's a way to force these jerks to surrender or lose their money. Get two copies of the exact same Strat-o-matic team (or other company) so they have the exact same player cards. Then offer to put your paycheck up against theirs every week with only ONE change in the team: They replace the four starting pitchers with four Nolan Ryan cards of their choice (his four best years or his best year four times) and you get to do the exact same thing with one of the other pitchers of the 60s or 70s (Koufax or Marichal or Gibson or Carlton or Horlen or Peters or many others.) What will of course will happen is that Ryan will keep getting ten strikeouts a game and keep losing. And if you do play every Friday (payday) for two or three years his Ryan card will probably have a no-hitter. Maybe those Ks and occasional no-hitters will be solace enough for him losing so many paychecks. ..... ..... tues Oct 26, 10 am... . under construction... 10-19 monday.... ..... ..... ..... .10-9 fri....under construction 10-8-98 thursday..____ _____ ____ ____ . Here's some stuff from a magazine I bought on Oct.30,1998: SPORT MAGAZINE APRIL 1986::: On the last day of the 1985 home season, the Astros lost to the Braves in front of 2,600 fans, the smallest crowd in the 20 year history of the Astrodome. "They were just a very drab, mediocre team," says a reporter who covers them'... ...'BRINGING IN THE FENCES WAS SUPPOSED TO HELP. Sure enough, there were 94 homeruns in the Dome last year, compared to only 47 the year before. But it didnt make the Astros more exciting and it didn't help attendance." NOW DID YOU NOTICE THE PART ABOUT BRINGING IN THE FENCES TO RAISE OFFENSIVE STATS AND REDUCE DEFENSIVE STATS???... Now read this blurb right under it that was in a little gray box: "KEY TO CONTENDING: NOLAN RYAN HAS TO COME BACK FROM HIS WORST ERA (3.80) SINCE 1971" .. ARE THESE WRITERS BLIND? OR INCREDIBLY STUPID? CAN'T THEY SEE THAT HE WAS NO BETTER OR WORSE THAN THE YEAR BEFORE BUT THAT BRINGING IN THE FENCES TOOK AWAY HIS UNFAIR ADVANTAGE THAT THE DISTANT FENCES GAVE HIM OVER BATTERS. THE 3.80 ERA IS HIS REAL ERA WITHOUT THE UNFAIR ADVANTAGE OTHER TEAMS PITCHERS DIDNT HAVE.!!! Here's some more from the same page (59):; Mike Scott 18-8 3.29, is for real and Bob Knepper 15-13 is a solid 3rd or 4th starter. But Joe Niekro is gone and Nolan Ryan ( 2 WINS IN HIS LAST 20 STARTS) may be finished" (No, not if they give him back his unfair advantage or if he moves to another team that will)... ___`` __ ___ yy____ .... ..... But of considerably more importance, HE FINISHED IN A SEVEN-WAY TIE FOR 27th PLACE IN VICTORIES WITH 10" (my note: SO? HE USUALLY HAD BAD RECORDS, SEE THE SEASONS I'VE BEEN LISTING HERE). It goes on: "REMARKABLY, 33 PITCHERS WON AS MANY, OR MORE GAMES IN 1985 AND NONE, NOT EVEN PITTSBURGH'S JOSE DeLEON, WHO LED THE LEAGUE IN LOSSES WITH 19, APPROACHED RYAN'S SEQUENCE OF ONE WIN IN NINETEEN STARTS (JULY 25 TO SEPT.30). My note: This mag did not mention what the previous one did: HIS UNFAIR FENCE ADVANTAGE WAS FINALLY TAKEN AWAY AND FOR THE FIRST TIME HE WAS EXPOSED FOR WHAT HE REALLY WAS!!!)... .... .... Heres another mag.; STREET AND SMITHS BASEBALL 1986 p76:: "One of the most significant, if least understood factors in the Houston team structure is its air-conditioned stadium. THE BALL SIMPLY DOES NOT TRAVEL WELL THERE and the Astros have always been a singles hitting team. IT HURTS THEM ON THE ROAD. HOUSTON MUST EDUCATE ITS PLAYERS TO ADJUST A LITTLE IN STYLE WHEN THEY ARE AWAY FROM HOME. IT IS NOT THE SAME GAME IN THE ASTRODOME, A STRUCTURE EIGHT FLOORS BELOW THE GROUND, AS IT IS IN OTHER STADIUMS." (my note: This says that the stadium is very bised pro-pitcher and anti-batter and it makes BOTH sides pitchers look better and BOTH sides batters look worse. But visitors only get either rewarded (pitchers) or screwed (batters) for a few games a year. Houstons pitchers have half a season of phonily-improved stats, while its batters stats are phonily-worsened. fri nov.13... ....(Note: I don't think Ryan had the best fastball since Feller, I think Sam McDowell's was better. But an INCREDIBLE ELEVEN of those TWENTY took place in the 1970s!!!! No, they arent all Ryan. There are lots of other guys in there, too. NOW WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU ABOUT THE 1970s IF MORE THAN HALF OF ALL THE TIMES IN HISTORY TOOK PLACE IN THOSE FEW YEARS??? Unless you are a complete idiot it tells you that something about the rules or equipment caused it, not the sudden appearance of Supermen!! And there were FOUR more in the 1960s. Thats FIFTEEN out of TWENTY in those two decades. And FOUR were in the DEAD-BALL era of 1901-1919. So that leaves JUST ONE in the entire period from 1912 to 1963 which was Bob Feller in 1946. So heres Clemens winning it unanimously with stats that are not only not super but actually way below average for a CY winner. ( 20-6 2.65 271 Ks). Now why is that? Answer: Because 1998 was such a phony, biased pro-batter season that it was just as difficult to get stats like that in 1998 as it was to win 31 in 1968 or go 25-3 in 1978.
