Roman Empire
circa AD 50 to AD 250

LONDINIUM:
This undecorated lamp was molded directly from an original lamp. It was named after a second lamp which is also nearly identical, found in London in the vicinity of the Thames. This lamp would date to the mid or late 1st century AD through the 2nd century AD.

GAUL:
This type is known as a firmalampen, which roughly means "factory lamp". These lamps were made in large quantities in specialized lamp workshops all over the Roman empire, but most especially in northern Italy. Many feature a maker's mark on the base, and in our model, we've used the letters MARRS. This reproduction is styled after an original lamp from an old European collection and probably made in northern Italy, then exported into Gaul. Another original consulted in the production of this style was found in Jerusalem and bore the inscription HEROD, (in Greek letters). The Gaul is a style in use during the 1st and 2nd century AD.

LUNA:
Cast directly from an original lamp, the Luna dates to the mid 1st century to probably the early 2nd century AD. The cresecent moon and star indicate this may have been a lamp symbolizing the goddess Selenus or Luna.

CORINTH:
From the mid 1st century to the 3rd century AD, a popular lamp style featured a rounded body with a short, rounded spout and a pierced or solid handle. Many of the same decorative elements found on the earlier lamps were still employed. The Corinth once again features Cupid, carrying a torch. This cupid is based on a very similar original lamp excavated from the Roman period ruins at Corinth, Greece and the lamp body was cast from the same original as the Luna above. The lamp Corinth is close in appearance to a lamp found at Pompeii from its last days of life.

LEPTIS MAGNA:
A running lion is featured as the central design on this later Roman Empire lamp. The lion was not only popular as a figure on its own in Roman art, but also frequently appeared in conjunction with other Roman figures such as Hercules and Cybele. Lions are also often found in scenes with other animals, usually attacking. The lamp body is cast from teh same original as the Luna.

OSTIA:
The Ostia features a bunch of grapes on the discus, encircled on the lamp shoulders by a grape vine. Grapes were associated with the "first fruits" offerings in Israel, and were a symbol of plenty for peoples all over the empire. They were also closely tied to the Roman god Bacchus, who was patron of wines. The body is cast from teh same original lamp as the Luna.
