For those interested, I have been doing the same type of cane for awhile. I gave the directions on how I do it in another message posted to the "cyber-cane swap" on this list. Here is the info. - I haven't seen the Bead and Button article but this is my version.

Here are my directions:

Basically this is just like doing a "Natasha" or "Magic" bead.

1. Take any cane and stand it on end so that it is vertical.

2. Slice straight down so that you are cutting directly down the middle of the cane.

You should now have two semi-circle canes, if you started out with a
round cane. If you started with a square cane you will have two rectangles.

3. Put one half away.
4. Put the other semi-circle cane with the flat side down.

5. Make two slices but don't remove the first slice after cutting.

6. Remove both slices from the cane and open them up like you would a
locket. You now have an entire round cane slice (mirror image) made up of
the two facing halves.

When you do this with a very distorted face cane you get hilarious
expressions and they somehow still look like faces! Now, whenever I make a
face cane I use the distorted ends to make my "magic faces" and have started
a series of vessels and bottles with these canes worked into the design. The
series is called "Moods and Attitoods".
BTW, I also have been combining all of my old canes, uneven slices and ends
of canes to make the same type of canes. It is amazing how what you think is
the most ugly design turns magically into a wonderful design when turned
into a mirror image.
Try it - you'll have great fun!
