All families have problems, some big, some small and OURS is no exception. Working together, talking, listening and being a "friend" to one another keeps a FAMILY together.

LOVE is what a family is based on. There are times we all fail to love each other, to take into consideration one anothers feelings and beliefs. We find fault with each other and NOT within ourselves. These are some of the things that can tear the HEART out of a family. The other is VIOLENCE. A home with violence has no stability. Physical, mental and sexual abuse are 3 main causes for a family structure to fall apart.

We thank God everyday for the loving family he has given us. We have grown from 7 of us to 21 of us in these 37 years. My husband and I are very PROUD of the way our children have grown into fine adults. All of our five children have children of their own now, so OUR family structure has really blossomed. Our 9 Grandkids (5 boys and 4 girls) are a joy to us.

Our LOVE for each other was shared with each of our children. They grew-up in a household that gave each his or her own responsibilities, rules to abide by (which we all strayed from at times) and NO VIOLENCE. Yes we had our arguments, hurt feelings, lost privileges, but we stuck together through it all and today we can honestly say"WE ARE A LOVING FAMILY".

This brings me to the title of MY PAGE "A HOME WITHOUT VIOLENCE". I have put together some statistics on Domestic Violence and Child Abuse. They are as follows:

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS A CRIME

Domestic Violence is the most common of all crimes.

• A women is beaten every 15 seconds in the United States.
• About 2/3 of all couples experience at least one violent incident; in ¼ of these couples violence is a common occurence.
• Twenty percent of all murders in this country are committed within the family; 13% are committed by spouses.
• Abuse often occurs during pregnancy. In just one hospital emergency department, 12% of pregnant women had been abused. These women had twice as many miscarriages as non-abused women.

Most family violence is committed against women.

• Ninety-five percent of all spousal assaults are committed by men.
• Six million American women are beaten each year by their husbands or boyfriends. Four thousand of them are killed.
• Battering is the major cause of injury to women--more frequent than auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined.
• One in four female suicides were victims of family violence.

Domestic violence takes its toll on the family, society and the future.

• Each year over one million women seek medical help for injuries caused by battering.
• Victims of domestic violence are three times more likely to be victimized again than are victims of other types of crimes.
• Children are emotionally traumatized by witnessing family violence; many of them grow up to repeat the pattern as victim or abuser.
• At least 1/3 of all men who beat their wives also beat their children.
• Abuse costs businesses an estimated five million dollars annually in absenteeism and hundreds of millions of dollars in abuse-related medical bills.

If these facts startle you, you are not alone. You may also be surprised to know that abuse happens in every neighborhood, to women of every age, race, social-economic background, religion and sexual orientation.
