Lost WV History

Dec. 15, 1967:  The Silver Bridge connecting Ohio and Point Pleasant, WV collapsed at 5:00pm killing 46 people.

Jan. 3, 1921:  The old West Virginia capitol burned to the ground in Charleston.  The fire was caused by an explosion in the attic that contained guns and ammunition. 

May 31, 1967:  The Skateland in Charleston was closed by its owners in order to prevent letting African Americans use the rink.  The states Human Rights Act went into effect June 1,1967.

Feb. 20,1962:   A house was moved down the Kanawha River by barrage in order to clear the way for the South Side Expressway in Charleston.

Feb.26, 1972:  A coal refuse dam broke sending a 30 foot wall of water down Buffalo Creek. This rush of water killed 125 people and left 4,000 people homeless.

July 8, 2001:  An early morning rainstorm flooded Mercer, Fayette, Wyoming, McDowell, and Raleigh Counties.  Rainfall amounts varied from 3 to 8 inches.  Mullens in Wyoming County was one of the hardest hit areas.
