THE GAME SYSTEM

All actions are resolved by using a DIFFICULTY NUMBER (DN).

A 20 sided dice is rolled. If the result is inferior or equal to the Difficulty Number (DN), the action is a success.

Two notions are important in the way to evaluate the success and the difficulty of the action:

Calculation of the Difficulty Number, and Success level.

The Difficulty Number is, for an action that uses a skill, given by the skill total. That is Level + natural ability. (The natural ability being the characteristic or average of characteristics on which the skill is based).

This basic DN is used in optimum situations. It can be altered by various situations, giving it a modifier : DIFFICULTY FACTOR (DF) from -10 to +5 to represent the many possible difficulties that can make the task harder to perform. The basic Difficulty Factor (DF) is 0

Thus, for a skill use, the Difficulty Number is equal to the Skill Total + Difficulty Factor.

SKILL: DN = SKILL TOTAL +DF

For an action that cannot be covered by a skill, the Difficulty Number is based on the Characteristic Value of the characteristic that is the most closely related to the task, multiplied by a COMPLEXITY FACTOR (CF). To this total you then add the usual Difficulty factor.

The Complexity factor can be x 0.5, x 1, x1.5, x2. It represents the intrinsic difficulty of the action. The Difficulty Factor represents the situation in which this action has to be performed, hence the use of two different modifiers.

Thus, for a non skill use, the Difficulty number is equal to the characteristic value x a complexity factor + a Difficulty Factor.

NON SKILL: DN = (CHARACTERISTIC x CF) + DF

If the roll of the 20 sided dice is above the Difficulty Number, the action fails.

A natural 20 roll is always a critical failure. Meaning that the action not only fails but does so in a drastic and troublesome way. (Nota. No critical failures for DN above 20)

If the roll is equal or below the Difficulty Number, the amount of success depends on the success level.

There are Five different success level:

-Average : you barely succeed.

-Medium: You succeed quite well

-High: You succeed perfectly

-Special: You succeed in a better way than you hoped

-Critical: You succeed in the best possible way.

The success level (SL) is calculated by the margin in which you succeed.

This means that, the lower the dice result is, the better the success.

The table below gives the success level according to the Difficulty number.
