CAN WE
TALK?
 Hi, and welcome. Here i'll try and
describe my trials and tribulations while toiling
away at my home pages. My experiences, probably
similar to yours, but if not maybe you can learn
from some of my mistakes.
Well no-one told
me exactly what a homepage was so I began first
by looking around at others. Wow! some of them
were really neat. Ok, I'll give that a try I
murmur to myself. I speak to myself alot, you'll
find out.
#1) Find a host--Geocities here I
come-and then went. Sign up is easy-forget the
rest, greek to me. Next stop Fortunecity, same
results. Now i'm feeling like a big dummy. Next
Talk City, ah ha!, can handle these directions on
how to procede. Now I'm excited, can't wait to
get started.
#2) I'd better go learn how to
transload and upload. They tell me I can't do
anything without those skills. Something about
Bandwidth, a nice name for stealing. Trusty
notebook in hand, off I go to Webtv for you. I
remember directions about that stuff there. I
diligently copy down these directions, find the
transload service, even put it on an F key for
quick access. Then I read what transload needs to
get my gifs from one place to another. FTP what
the heck is that. Back to Talk City to find out.
Took me 3 DAYS to find Talk Cities ftp.
Onward--find my gifs change their living
quarters--ready to make my mark upon the
web.
#3) I had fooled around a little with
html in my sig box so I had the basics.Soon I
learned that basics are not enough for a
homepage. TABLES, and not the kind you eat off
of, have to be learned. Note book in hand again,
off I go to Draacs and other such aids. First
thing I notice is not all instructors use " in
the same places like in widths and heights. Html
has some uniformity but not all of it. Wonderful,
now which way do I go? Tags, I played that is
school. trs, tds, brs, p's hr's to name only a
few. Don't you think all this stuff has cute
little names?
DO YOU KNOW YOU CAN SPEND HOURS LOOKING FOR THESE
< OR THESE " THAT YOU LEFT OUT? AND WHATEVER YOU
DO DON'T FORGET THE /. Next the experts tell me I should
learn some Java Script. Took a look, NO
WAYYYYYYY.
#4) Ok back to Talk City with all this
new found knowledge. Guess what? for 3 days their
system was not operational, couldn't get into
Edit. Grrrrrr, finally success, everything is on
the page, looks ok, proud, now time to show my
husband what I have accomplished. The moment is
at hand-----OH NO-----WHERE DID ALL MY
STUFF GO, the
page only shows up blank squares. No one told me
that you couldn't put your gifs in a directory to
keep them organized and leave space in main for
new gifs. Back to edit I go, at least I thought.
Guess what? system is down again for repairs.
Grrrrr, That's it i've had it. Off to find me a
new host.
#5) Tripod, it is, now I have to
re-transload, in and out of edit to fix and
refix. Guess What? Tripod now tells me I don't
exist or their to busy to use right now. Then I
realize, all hosts are the same, they're run by
comp. that are programed by people, who make
mistakes like me, ha ha. Tripod says to
advertise your page, I sign up, now they want me
to make a banner, ok, found a place to do
that.Get an e-mail and they tell me the banner
will do but people with browsers netscape can't
read my stuff. Ok , how do I fix that , I ask?
Answer- I don't know.
Off I go on another
journey to find out. Still haven't, oh well,
someday.
#6) The best advice I can give anyone
is, learn how to CUT, COPY and PASTE, then hook
up a printer to your web if you can and have lots
of patience. Oh yes, VERY IMPORTANT, don't eat or
drink around your keyboard or you may have to buy
a new one. A hard lesson I learned. If your a
smoker and trying to quit, wait until after your
homepage is done.
Now on to
what I have finished and check back again to see
what i've added, lots of ideas rolling around in
my head.

good suggestions you may have for improving my
sites. Just e-mail me.
I tend to use
large graphics for backgrounds and sometimes too
many gifs so the pages may take a few to load. If
your wandering around, thanks for your patience.
Most of all have fun, because that's what I
intended when i put these pages together.
