Glenfinnan Monument, Loch Shiel

Scotland

Loch Shiel runs from Glenfinnan in the north, and separates Moidart from Ardgour. The monument at the head of the loch was built in 1815 by MacDonald of Glenaladale on the site where Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard and called the clans to arms at the start of the ill-fated Jacobite Rising of 1745. MacDonald was the grandson of one of those who answered that call and the monument, with its lone highlander, stands in silent tribute to all the clansmen who fought and died for the Prince.
