Writers in Performance Winners for 2006 below.

A talented group of authors performed their work at the May 20th event.

The performance winners as chosen by the audience were:

1st Place, Michael Davis for his short story, Ixarri
2nd Place, Karen Eisenbray for her short story, Mother's Day.
3rd Place, Ron Pellegrino for his novel excerpt from The Centerfielder.

Guidelines for this annual program are below. (submission guidelines)

2006 WIP Finalists

“The Centerfielder" - a novel excerpt by Ron Pellegrino.

Writers in Performance is an opportunity for writers to share their work with an audience. Your submission will be judged based on quality and "performability", so please submit an entry suitable for a five-minute public reading, which you will perform. Writers of longer works, please submit your "classiest" passage.

Deadline for 2006 is for entry to be postmarked by April 16th, 2006. Performance will be held on Saturday, May 20, at the same location as last year, the Calvary Church on 68th and Roosevelt in Seattle. Cash awards for winners. Time 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm.

Selected entries will be presented at the May program, which includes a dessert buffet. Three participants will receive cash awards as voted on by the audience. SWA will offer a rehearsal for selected entrants prior to the Performance evening. All entrants, selected or not, receive free admission to the event.

General Guidelines
  1. Approximately 1500 words, or less.
  2. Aim for five minutes of narration.
  3. The work submitted must be the work you wish to perform.
      Categories:
    • Short story
    • Non-fiction
    • Essay or Article
    • Novel excerpt
    • Poetry (multiple poems OK, but limit to 3 pages)
  4. Unpublished at time of entry
  5. The author's name must NOT appear anywhere on the manuscript.

Manuscript Guidelines

  1. Send two copies .
  2. SWA requires 12 point Times New Roman, ( or Courier New ) double-spaced on 8-1/2" x 11" white bond paper with minimum 1" margins
  3. The left margin should be justified, and the right margin ragged.
  4. Indent paragraphs with no space between them unless there is a break in scene or viewpoint
  5. Structured poetry may be single-spaced.
  6. Headings: Title, Category, and Word Count must appear on the first page in the upper right hand corner, with Title and Page Number on each page thereafter
  7. For poetry, the title of the first poem, and a page number, should appear on the second and third pages
  8. Don't send an SASE. Manuscripts will be recycled.
  9. For identification, use a 3"x5" card with the Title, Category, and First Line of your submittal, your Name, Address, and Phone Number. Seal the card into a #6 (small) envelope with the Title and Category of your entry printed on its front. Your package should be a 9"x12" mailer with the manuscript(s), your check for the entry fee(s), and the identification envelope(s). Print the category(s) in the lower left corner of the mailer.

SWA members: $10.00 for the first submission and $5.00 for others.
Non-members: $15.00 for the first submission and $5.00 for each submission thereafter.
