Trivia
In the late 1950's Erma Franklin was approached by Berry
Gordy and Billy Davis into becoming the first artist on
their new upcoming record label. She even went to Chicago
with the pair of them to see Phil Chess of CHESS records
hoping they would distribute their label. But her father
convinced Erma to stay at school and finish her
education. Erma subsequently enrolled in Clark College in
Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in business administration and
secretarial science. Erma was later devastated when she
learned that three songs originally intended for her to
sing were recorded by others: "You Got What It
Takes" by Marv Johnson, "All I Could Do Was
Cry" by Etta James and "Sweetest Feeling"
by Jackie Wilson.
The 1960 recording, "All I Could Do Was Cry" by
Etta James on ARGO 5339 was written by Berry Gordy from
Erma's personal break-up with a boyfriend.
When Aretha Franklin left Columbia Records and signed
with Atlantic Records, both Erma and her late sister,
Carolyn (born 13-May-1944 in Memphis, Tennessee. Died
25-April-1988 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cause:
cancer) did the background vocals for their sister's
first recordings. Some of those songs included "You
Make Me Feel Like (A Natural Woman)," "Do Right
Woman, Do Right Man" and "Baby, I Love
You." .
