William Bell

Red Saunders Band  around 1954 ~ 1955 William Bell won a talent contest at Memphis' annual Mid-South fair. The first prize was $500.00 and a trip to Chicago to sing at Club Delisa for a weekend with The Red Saunders Band. It was Red Saunders who recommended William Bell to Phineas Newborn. 

The Phineas Newborn Band (members William Bell, ........................) was a member of the band on and off for the next five years while at the same time being a member of The Del-Rios.

Stax 128 - Any Other Way / Please Help Me, I'm Falling - 1962 (after this release William Bell was drafted into U.S. Army from 1962 ~ 1966. When he came back from training, he cut as much material as he could in two weeks, which was then released as singles. STAX had enough material stock-piled that they could release everything as an album "The Soul Of A Bell". When William Bell came out of the service, the first couple of releases didn't really hit so he took a hiatus and pondered over what he was doing wrong -- then he started writing - the first hit record that came out was "Everybody Loves A Winner")

Stax 248 - A Tribute To A King* / Every Man Oughta Have A Woman - 1968 *tribute to Otis Redding, the song was written a few days after his death. William Bell not wanting to "cash in" on the tragedy, decided to send his recording to Otis Redding's widow Zelma as a keepsake. Zelma Redding loved the recording and called Stax requesting them to release it.
