I think most of the laws are fair, with the exception of those that exclude Treasure Hunting on PUBLIC property. If the bums who have gone in before have torn things up and left holes, that's not my fault. There should be a way to sell licenses to hunt on public property, just like with animal hunting. There would still be Rangers there to enforce the laws and ticket or arrest the offenders. This is MY property as much as it is yours and the government should not be able to exclude me from doing something very safe and enjoyable on that land.
Just my 2 cents!

So many laws have been passed in
the last 10 years to protect us from ourselves and to protect historic
items that I am sure 100% of the detectorist in the country have broken
at least one of them. Why make it a crime to dig an object of history,
pick up a Spear point or make it a crime for not reporting an item to the
proper authorities if over 50 years old and found on Federal Land. If you
ever see an old bottle over 50 years old on Federal Property Don't TOUCH
IT DON'T PICK IT UP!!!!! You will be breaking the law. Another problem
I see is for the Treasure Hunters of the oceans. People give there life
for history and locating lost Treasure Ships only to lose everything in
court battles. They are fined for placing a hole into the sand looking
for treasures that would never otherwise be found or funded by the states
or government. So what, a hole in the sand in an Ocean of Thousands of
Square miles. Mother earth has a way of repairing itself. I think there
are two many regulations and laws regarding Metal Detecting and treasure
hunting. Some laws are good common sense laws "like you don't dig on a
protected historic site" others are just stupidity and greed from BLM and
the administrators of who need job security "like you can't take a Metal
detector and look for items on BLM property because you may find an unknown
historic site. WOW wouldn't that be great to discover a site on BLM land
that is unknown and have it named after the founded. Items would be placed
into the nearest museum with your name on it. Just think of all the historic
sites that could be found if we were allowed to hunt on land that belongs
to the people of the United States. What a wonderful time we would have...
I would enjoy turning everything over to the BLM just for the opportunity
to Hunt on Our Land..
PS ... About the 50 year old law..
I want to know one thing ... If my dad fell down on BLM land could I pick
him up without the risk of prosecution (he is 72 years old) ?
