DREAMS

By ROCshadow

Part 1

The continuous typing on a keyboard was the only sound that filled the empty office building of Warrior Publications Company. It came from the accounting office: it was restless, and behind the keyboard was Jennifer Heart, the Comptroller of the company, trying to survive the last day at work before going on vacation.

" I love it when the office is quiet; there's too many people asking silly questions during the day." She thought, as the printer began working again, "One more page and I'm out of here, free at last"

Finally, the vacation had come; three weeks of doing anything she wanted, all by herself. Life couldn't be better for Jenn at this point; she was a successful executive and although her career demanded a hell of a lot, she always loved the challenge…..if only she have more peace and quiet, her life would be perfect.

"Can I talk to you for a minute JJ?" The voice of Marge the Public Relations Manager, was hesitant but still startled the dark haired accountant.

"Good God woman!! You scared the hell out of me, what are you doing here so late?"

Jenn and Marge were friends since high school and they always made a great working team.

"I…need to talk to you about something important"

Marge was visibly nervous, she hated to ask a favor from her friend at such short notice, but deep inside she knew it was in the best interest of her friend and the company too. But Jenn had a reputation of being a very private person who didn’t like to be bossed around, particularly when she was leaving on vacation.

"What do you want Marge? I'm almost finished and I am looking forward to going home and soaking in the tub for a while, it's been a long day."

Jenn knew Marge was planning something; she was so close to finally going on vacation she almost taste it, and for some strange reason she felt as if Marge was going to stop her from taking her much earned, and deserved rest.

"Huh…JJ you see…we have a little problem here and I need your help" Marge was expecting an outburst from the tall accountant and she wasn't disappointed.

" What kind of problem Marge!!! I'm about to go on vacation at last. I really need a break and now you tell me there’s a problem! What in the world could be so urgent for you to wait this late in the night to talk with me"

Marge knew only too well the bad temper of her friend, had witnessed it several times. Jenn had a reputation that she had earned a long time ago, but Marge never let that scare her.

"Listen Jenn, don't play the grumpy dwarf, you know it doesn't work with me. Please calm down and let me buy you a coffee and I fill you in on the latest trick I played at the associates meeting this morning"

Jenn was frustrated by the calmness of her best friend "Damn, she didn’t even flinch this time. I'm getting old!" She thought to herself, as she watched the peaceful expression on Marge's face.

"Look at me M, I'm leaving on vacation TODAY no matter what crisis you are having! Are you listening to me? Read my lips M, I'M LEAVING!!!"

"This woman is going to die from a heart attack if she doesn't hold her temper, but with me she has no choice but to listen" Marge thought, trying to keep a straight face while talking to the now hysterical accountant.

"I am listening JJ but apparently you weren't, please shut down your computer so we can close here and leave. I'm starving and we have a lot to talk about." Marge was starting to feel tired, it had been a long day for all of them.

"M, I have plans for tonight. I can't go out to play with you at such short notice." Jenn had an evil grin on her face when she told Marge about this; she wanted to make it difficult for the hardheaded petite woman to boss her around.

"You're a lying little shit! I know you very well, you don't have a boyfriend; you don't even date! I'm your only friend and you don’t like to go out at night. So stop pulling my chain, take your things and let's get the hell out of here. I'll be waiting for you outside." With that last statement she turned around and let an open mouthed Jenn inside the office. "Damn, I'm good" was Marge's last thought.

"Arrgh!!! Bloody hell this woman is suicidal!!" Jenn was angry but could see no other choice. She turned off her computer and went in search of her annoying best friend.

*************’

"Kristen you're up in ten."

The producer of the talk show knocked on the door of Kristen O'Rourke, the youngest writer to have won the Nobel Prize, of literature last year. The blond haired petite woman was a wonder beyond words; she had achieved  fame after her book, "Dreams", had broken all bestseller records on the American continent. Now she was a celebrity in the splendor of her life, and she was very happy with her professional life; but her personal life was giving her a lot to think about.

"Hey baby, I have to go, I'm up in a couple of minutes, so we’ll have to continue this conversation another time…….No, don't call me, I'll call you…….I really have to go now ok? We talk later, bye" The blonde sighed as she put down her mobile phone with a pensive look; she didn't notice the small figure looking at her from the open door.

"Who was that? Tara?" Asked the curly haired woman with her arms crossed in front of her.

The writer woke from her reverie as soon as she heard the voice of her manager. "Yes Steph, it was Tara."

"And why the sad face. Were you two fighting?"

Stephiny Salomon was more than a manager to Kristen. They were like sisters; had been ever since Kristen's parents had died when she was sixteen and Stephiny's parents had adopted her as their daughter too.

"I decided to end the relationship before it even started, Steph. I don't feel like being with anyone right now and I don't want to hurt Tara; she is still a kid."  The sadness in the voice of the young writer worried the petite woman no end. This was yet another hint of Kristen's depression. Stephiny tried to lighten the mood.

"And since when are you embracing a celibate life? Are you joining some strange clan or something that I wasn't aware of?"

"Very funny Steph, you talk as if I am a sex addict or something! Let me tell you, I haven't been intimate with Tara and I don't plan on being intimate with anyone until I fall in love. I'm tired of all this shit." Kristen started to comb her short blond hair and Stephiny began pacing in the room.

"Kris, all you need is a break from all of this; what I'm going to do, is clear  your agenda after the writers convention for you, so that you can take a much needed break. What do you think?"

Kristen stood, pensive at the offer from her best friend. Stephiny continued.

"The convention is in Puerto Rico, they say it's a beautiful island, so I suppose you can stay there after the convention for a couple of days to rest and relax"

"Sounds good to me; I really need a break." They began walking to the TV studio.

***************

The small café was typical of the kind of place the duo hung out at; it was near the office and it served the best latté in town; just what they needed after a long day at work doing the month end closing. They were seated at their favorite table at the far end of the café.

"Now, do you care to fill me in that crazy idea of yours?" Jenn asked raising a perfectly black eyebrow.

"Well, seeing that you're on vacation and you don't have any plans at all, I decided that the Company should make an effort and send you for a week on a paid vacation to the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. So here are your tickets to San Juan, Puerto Rico." Said Marge, smiling broadly.
