WHISPER IN THE WIND
BY
DARLIN’
“Hey D.” said the tall brunette bumping hips with the petite blonde, who was doing dishes at the sink.
“Hi Jackie.” smiled Dannie.
“So, are you ready to dump my hideous sister and go out with me yet?”
Dannie looked up into the twinkling blue eyes of Jackie. “Jackie, how can you say that? Jenny is your twin. You two look exactly the same.” Dannie was used to Jackie’s flirting. Jackie had been flirting with her since Jenny and she had started dating back in April.
“Ugh, I am hurt. I am much cuter than her and my butt is much nicer too.” replied Jackie, wiggling the body part in question as she turned away from Dannie.
Dannie popped Jackie on her tight derriere with her dishtowel. “You are such a nut.”
Jackie had let out a yelp of pain and was rubbing her throbbing butt. “Ooh. You are so mean. I don’t see what my sister sees in you.”
“We’re in love, silly. You should try it sometime. You haven’t said anything to her about the party tomorrow, have you?
“No. It’s still a surprise birthday party for my old sister. I’ll have you know, I have been in love before.” ‘I still am.’ thought Jackie, looking at her sister’s beautiful girlfriend. “I gotta go. Tell tall, dark, and old that I’ll see her tonight, and to be on time for a change.”
“Ok. I’ll make sure she leaves on time even if I have to kick her out of bed.” smiled Dannie.
“Well, don’t be that cruel to her.” Jackie winked at Dannie and walked out the back door.
“Was that my loud-mouthed baby sister?” asked a sleepy-eyed Jenny.
“Yeah, it was honey.”
Dannie leaned up and kissed her sleep-rumpled girlfriend. “Mmmm, you taste like toothpaste.”
Jenny took Dannie in her arms and gave her a more appropriate good morning kiss.
Jenny went to the counter to get her a much-needed cup of coffee. Dannie took this time to take in the beauty that was Jenny. Jenny was at least six feet tall. She had striking blue eyes. Those eyes could speak volumes. She had angular features that reminded Dannie of ancient times. Jenny had an olive complexion, wide shoulders, a narrow waist, a tight butt (despite what Jackie said), long legs, and muscles covering everything. She was soft in places where she was supposed to be soft and firm in places that were supposed to be firm. Dannie knew that Jenny and Jackie worked for their muscles. They both had a strenuous workout routine that kept them in such good shape. Both women were involved in martial arts. Their job didn’t hurt either. They worked on the ambulance crew.
Jenny turned to see Dannie’s slow perusal of her body. “See anything you like?" purred Jenny.
“Oh yeah. If you let me, I would like to point them out in detail.” blushed Dannie.
“Let’s get it on,” growled Jenny, doing a bad impression of judge Jerry Sheindlin and picking up her petite girlfriend.
Dannie laughed and said, “Oh, that was real romantic. You and your sister have got to stop watching that show.”
Later in the afternoon, blue eyes blinked open. Jenny stretched out her long lean form, listening as vertebrae popped back into correct alignment.
Dannie stirred in her sleep. She was sleeping on top of her naked lover. She grumbled, “Stop that. It makes me hurt just hearing it.”
“Well baby, I’m getting old. My body’s falling apart.”
“You and your sister act like you are ancient. Thirty is not old.”
“Don’t remind me how old I’ll be. At least Jackie gets to be twenty-nine a day longer than me.”
“You two are as bad as children when it comes to your birthdays. She’s only two minutes younger than you. You two love teasing each other about how your mom “deliberately” had you on New Year’s Eve and waited to have her on New Year’s Day.”
“She did, I tell you. It was all an evil plot to drive me insane.” sneered Jackie teasingly. She tickled Dannie’s ribcage.
Dannie rolled off of her girlfriend’s long body. “Go take a shower you goof ball. I have been given orders to make sure you get to work on time tonight. I’ll take mine when you are done and then I’ll fix supper while you work out.”
Jenny kissed her girlfriend thoroughly. “You could come help me if you want to.”
“There’s an offer I can’t refuse.” Dannie got up and followed her tall companion into the bathroom.
Later in the evening, Dannie welcomed Jackie home in a way similar to saying goodbye to her girlfriend. She leaned up to give Jackie a kiss on the cheek. Jackie turned her head at the last minute and got the kiss on her lips. “Ooh Dannie. Did you miss me that much?” chuckled Jackie, wiggling her eyebrows at her sister’s girlfriend.
Dannie decided to play along. “Oh yeah Jackie. I’ve been counting the minutes until you would get home. I thought I would give you your birthday present early.” Dannie stuck out her tongue and wiggled it seductively at Jackie.
Jackie’s mouth went dry. She rasped out, “I need to take a shower.” ‘Oh God how I wish she was serious.’ Thought Jackie as she slipped under the cool running water. ‘This is getting so hard for me. After the holidays, I am going to have to move or something. This is just torture. I am in love with my sister’s girlfriend.’ She loved everything about her sister’s petite blonde lover. She loved Dannie’s long blonde hair. She thought how sensual those silken strands would feel caressing her skin as they made love. She loved those eyes that she could get lost in. She loved Dannie’s small, compact, muscled body. Her rock-hard abdominal muscles made Jackie drool. Dannie had a very slight tan giving her skin a youthful healthy glow. Jackie thought about her sister’s history with women. ‘You know that Jenny’s just going to date Dannie until she gets tired of her. She’ll throw her away just like she has all the others. I can’t let that happen. If I do, I’ll probably never see her again. Dannie and I deserve happiness. I’m going to find out if Jenny plans on staying with Dannie or not. If not, I’m going to make Dannie mine. She should have been anyway. I’m the one that brought her home all those months ago.’ With her mind made up, Jackie got out of the shower and dried her body while figuring out her plan of action. The plan that would make her dreams a reality. A plan that would get her the girl of her dreams and let her keep her sister at the same time.
Jackie went in to the living room and turned on the stereo. She then went to find her heart’s desire. Dannie was out on the back porch sitting in the swing looking out at the lake. Dannie was in thought. Jackie watched her for a minute. Dannie had one leg pulled up in the seat with her. Her hands and chin were resting on her knee. The other leg was dangling down and swinging her back and forth at an even pace. “Penny for your thoughts.” said Jackie quietly, breaking the serene silence.
“Oh, I was just thinking about the night that you brought me here. I never would have guessed that my life would change so much in less than nine months. I have a girlfriend that loves me, and that I love in return. I have a good job that I enjoy. And, I have you. You are a wonderful friend and you are like a sister-in-law to me. If you hadn’t caught me trying to strip your ambulance, I would probably still be in that gang…if not dead.
“You can’t give me all the credit Dannie. You had to want to change.” Jackie slid on to the swing next to Dannie and took the smaller woman’s hand in her own. You worked hard to get where you are now. You were so hard headed when I first brought you home. I knew your stubborn personality would be your greatest asset in the long run. You were so defiant at first. You were so beautiful when you would tell us how you were just going to leave and go back to your “hood.” Jackie’s hand cupped Dannie’s cheek. “I saw in you what you could be if you would only give yourself the chance. You are a wonderful, loving, intelligent, beautiful, young woman.” Jackie gathered her courage thinking, ‘Jenny is just using her, I love her.’ Jackie looked deeply into Dannie’s beautiful green eyes and finished quietly, “I’m in love with you.” Jackie leaned down and kissed Dannie’s tender inviting lips. Jackie felt Dannie respond and let out a faint moan that brought Dannie back to the present. Dannie broke the kiss.
“I think we should forget that happened Jackie. I love your sister. You two look alike, that’s what made me forget who I was kissing.” Dannie turned her eyes from the penetrating blue ones directed at her, but not before Jackie saw another thing that she loved about the petite blonde. Jackie saw the way Dannie’s eyes darkened when she was aroused.
“You can tell yourself that if you want to, but you responded to the kiss. I think you knew exactly who you were kissing.”
Jackie got up from the swing and walked back into the house to eat her supper that she knew was warm and waiting in the oven. Dannie always had her supper waiting for her. Dannie ran a web page design company out of their house. It was small, but it was growing and doing rather well financially. Jackie sat down to eat thinking, ‘You know exactly who was kissing you and you responded to it.’
Meanwhile, a confused blonde sat in a porch swing wondering what had just happened. ‘Why did I let her kiss me? Why did I kiss her back? Oh my god, I did kiss her back! Her…Jackie, not Jenny, not who I thought was Jenny! What am I doing kissing my girlfriend’s sister? Why did I respond to it?’ The small blonde felt a headache coming on. She went into the kitchen and took some Tylenol and went to her room to get some sleep. She felt the warm blue eyes caress her as she passed Jackie who was sitting at the kitchen table. “Goodnight.” Dannie said quietly in passing.
After eating, Jackie went and did her daily workout routine. When she got done, she still had too much anxious energy left to be able to get to sleep. She decided to go talk to her sister about her “intentions” toward Dannie. She walked in to the ambulance garage and noticed her sister’s old girlfriend Susan was there in the office. “Hey Susie. How’s it going?”
“It’s going good. How’s it going with you?”
“Oh, pretty good. Have you seen my sister around recently?”
“I’m right here.” said Jenny making her presence known as she came out of a supply room.
“Do you need something?”
“Yeah. Can we talk for a minute…alone?”
Susan took the hint. “I’ll just wait out by the rig.”
Jenny turned to her sister. “Well, what’s on your mind?”
“What’s Susan doing here?” asked Jackie, glaring at her sister.
“She came by to wish me a Happy Birthday.” said Jenny with a lascivious grin on her face. “Is that what you wanted to ask me? Do you have spies watching me or something?”
“No, but it looks like I should have someone watching you. You have a very beautiful girlfriend waiting at home for you. What are you doing with Susan? Don’t try to tell me nothing either, I’ve seen that look before. Usually it’s on my face though.”
“Listen Jackie, what Dannie doesn’t know wont hurt her. She’s a great girl. I really like her. Besides, the last time I checked, I didn’t see a wedding ring on my hand.”
“Ha,” laughed Jackie bitterly. “Like that would stop you. I’m amazed you were faithful this long. Don’t you know she loves you Jenny. You said what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her, but what I know just might hurt you.” Jackie turned on her heel and strode out of the ambulance station, more intent than ever to keep her sister from hurting Dannie. ‘I’ll make Dannie mine and I think I know just how to do it. It’s lucky for me that Dannie decided that we have a costume party.’
Jackie got a few hours sleep and got up to put her plan into action. She was supposed to be a doctor for the party and her sister was supposed to be a pirate. She had to go pick up the costumes for the two of them. Her sister would find out the costume part of the party when she got home. Both Jackie and Jenny had the evening off. Jenny would get some sleep and then the party would begin.
Jenny came home and took a shower and went to bed. Dannie was out getting things for the party and never noticed that Jackie had taken the garment bag into their room for Jenny that evening. Pinned to the bag was a note that read, “Put this on at six thirty and come downstairs. Don’t ask questions, just do it.” Jenny woke up a few hours later. She felt groggy so she jumped back in the shower real quick to wake herself up. After finishing up in the bathroom, she wandered back into the bedroom. She saw the garment bag and the note. When she saw what was in the garment bag she thought, ‘Ooh, this is kind of kinky. I never knew Dannie was into role playing.’
Unbeknownst to Jenny and Dannie, Jackie was in her costume and made her appearance at the same time as Jenny. All the guests yelled, “Surprise!” Jenny, of course thought they were all yelling this at her, but since she and her sister always celebrated on the same day, she grabbed Jackie by the arm and they started greeting their guests.
The party was getting into full swing when Jackie decided to put her plan in motion. She went to the dj and requested a song. She went and asked Dannie to dance. Dannie thinking she was going to be dancing with her girlfriend, readily accepted. Jackie decided to do a little dirty dancing and Dannie went along with it, thinking it was her girlfriend. Jackie drew Dannie to her and positioned her thigh between the smaller woman’s legs. Dannie was dressed as Peter Pan in a very short skirt so there was very little between the two women. Jackie cupped Dannie’s bottom and pulled her tighter against her hard thigh. Dannie once again thinking that she was dancing with Jenny started nibbling on her tall companion’s neck. After a few seconds Dannie rasped out, “Jenny, if you don’t stop this, this won’t be a birthday that any of our guests will forget anytime soon.”
Jackie chuckled low and throaty, sending arousing shivers through Dannie’s body. Jackie leaned over to whisper in the smaller woman’s ear, “Do you really want me to stop? Tell me how much you want me.”
Dannie looked up into the smoldering blue eyes. “I do want you. I want you so badly right now.” Dannie pulled Jackie’s head down for a kiss. The kiss started out slow and built in intensity and heat. Jackie licked Dannie’s bottom lip causing the lips to part. She slowly slid her tongue into Dannie’s mouth tasting the smaller woman’s tongue. The tongues started caressing each other, causing both women to have thoughts of a lovers hands caressing their bodies. Both women moaned from the fire the kiss was building.
Dannie’s motions followed her thoughts. She reached around and slid her hands under Jackie’s shirt. Jackie had always dreamed of having the smaller woman’s hands on her body. Jackie couldn’t explain it, but Dannie’s hands on her body, just felt right.
Jackie was losing her control quickly. She leaned forward again to whisper in Dannie’s small delicate ear. “I want to make love to you so badly right now, now and for every day yet to come. I love you Dannielle Thompson.”
Dannie sighed in her tall companion’s arms. “I want that too baby, but right now, we have a party to deal with. I don’t think we want to give a new meaning to party favors.” Dannie smiled up at Jackie. Jackie smiled down at the woman she loved. They shared another kiss and continued dancing to the song in a more subdued fashion, both women trying to reign in the emotions that moments ago threatened to overcome them.
Jackie happened to look up at that time and saw Susan walk in the door. She saw her sister and Susan go into the kitchen. Jackie thought, ‘Dannie will never believe me if I tell her something is happening between Jenny and Susan, so I’ll have to show her.’ She knew that it would hurt the woman that she so desperately loved, but she thought the sooner Dannie knew the truth, the better. She knew what Susan and Jenny would be doing in the kitchen, she knew her sister too well. The song they were dancing to ended and the two women broke contact. They were both still breathing a little heavy and they could see the flickering embers of arousal in the other’s eyes. Jackie looked into Dannie’s eyes and said, “I think we need a cold drink to cool us off. What do you think?” Dannie just nodded her head because her throat was a little dry. The two women held hands and walked toward the kitchen. As they walked into the kitchen, they both heard Susan moan, “Oh god Jenny. I’ve missed you so much.”
Dannie looked at the woman kissing Susan and then at the one holding her hand. She ripped off the bandana covering most of Jackie’s face. She saw that this wasn’t her girlfriend and knew the woman across the room was. She slapped Jackie across the face, and then stomped over to Jenny and repeated the action. She screamed, “How could you treat me this way? I loved you.” Realizing that Jackie as well as her girlfriend had played her for a fool, she locked eyes with Jackie and yelled, “How could you both treat me this way? You…you claim to love me. Ha, I don’t think either of you know the meaning of the word.” Unable to hold the tears back any longer, Dannie ran out the door crying.
Jackie locked her ice blue eyes with those of her sister and spat, “I knew you wouldn’t let me down. You always show your true colors sooner or later.” Jackie turned away and walked out the door to look for Dannie.
Jenny watched her sister go and whispered quietly, “Go get her sis. Get the woman that you love.” Susan heard this and asked, “You had this planned?” Jenny wondering if her sister or Dannie would ever forgive her, sighed and said, “They love each other. Jackie knows she loves Dannie. Maybe Dannie will figure it out now too. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway. I love them both. I don’t want to lose them.”
Susan feeling the pain of her girlfriend, wrapped the taller woman in her arms and said, “You’ve done your part. Now we have to wait and let love do it’s part.”
Jackie caught up with Dannie out by the horses. The small woman was always drawn to the big beautiful animals when she was having problems. “Dannie, wait a minute please. I need to talk to you. Let me explain.”
“Why? So you can tell me more lies of how you love me? I don’t think so. I may be a blonde, but I’m not ignorant!”
“I do love you. Can’t you see that? What would you have said if I told you that Jenny was cheating on you? You were so in love with her that you wouldn’t have believed me. You would have just thought that I was jealous. I meant it when I told you that I loved you. I’ve always loved you.”
“So why the costume change? Why did you switch them?”
“Would you have danced the way you did knowing that it was me?”
“Of course not!”
“Exactly. You wouldn’t let yourself respond to me, knowing that it was me. This may sound totally crazy to you, but I knew that sooner or later you would catch my sister with another woman and leave her. I wanted to hold you in my arms and make you want me and feel your lips touch me. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help myself. Please come back to the house with me. I’m pretty sure that you love me too. We could be happy together.”
Dannie looked into Jackie’s blue eyes and saw all the love that was waiting for her. She needed time though…time to think…time to figure out her feelings for the two women. “Jackie, I need some time alone. I need to do some thinking. I’ll let you know my decision as soon as I know it myself. That’s the best I can do right now. Just give me some time.
Jackie knew that she had to do as Dannie asked. As much as she wanted to plead with her, she knew it wouldn’t do any good. Dannie had to come to her on her own. Jackie watched Dannie walk off into the darkness. Jackie turned back towards the house saying a silent prayer as she went. She prayed that Dannie would find out what she knew in her heart to be true; they belonged together for all of eternity.
Dannie was walking in the woods that ran near the house. She thought about her life before she met Jenny and Jackie. The life she had as a gang member wasn’t one that she wanted to relive in any way. Dannie closed her eyes and Jackie’s image came to mind. She remembered the first time that she had seen Jackie. Jackie was standing over Dannie, her blue eyes boring into the smaller woman. Dannie saw the shoes first; she then slowly looked up the lean torso and fell into those blue eyes. She saw the emotions in the blue eyes above her. Her throat went dry and she stood up next to the taller woman. She immediately knew this was not a woman to mess with. She saw the edges of the lips crinkle in a small smirk. At first, that smirk infuriated her, but then she saw the eyes soften and could see friendliness directed at her. They went for coffee and talked late into the night. “Why did I go home with her? She couldn’t prove anything. I could have walked away. What was I thinking?” ‘I wanted to get to know her. I wanted to know what was hidden in the blue depths of her eyes. How did I go from wanting to get to know Jackie to being with Jenny? Oh yeah, Jackie was dating that other chick. What was her name? Jessica…something, she was not the right woman for Jackie. She needed someone like me. Someone like me…where did that come from?’ Dannie opened her eyes and walked a little farther and sat on a big boulder near the edge of the lake to ponder this question. Slowly she played the last few months over in her mind. She realized that when something good happened in her life, she told Jackie first. She told Jackie her problems too. Jackie was always there for her. ‘She does love me.’
‘Why did I start dating Jenny? Jackie was going out with that other girl.’ It suddenly hit Dannie with perfect clarity. She was jealous. She wanted Jackie for herself. She always had. Jenny was the next best thing. ‘Of course Jackie never said anything. She and Jenny are too close to fight over anything. Why would she fight anyway? Every time she came around Jenny and I, I would always be all over Jenny to make Jackie see how happy we were together. I wanted her to fight for me. I wanted to be with her. I didn’t want to have to leave and so I started going with Jenny.’ She remembered what Jackie had told her earlier. Jackie didn’t want her to leave. Jackie was the one who had asked her to move in…to stay. Dannie had been staying in their guestroom for a few days before she and Jenny started dating. Jenny hadn’t asked her to stay. Dannie realized that Jenny went along with everything because she loved her and Jackie. Jenny must have known that Jackie loved her. ‘She knew we would end up together.’
‘How would I feel if I had to leave? I would be devastated. It would kill me. Why? I would miss them both. Who would I miss the most?’ Dannie closed her eyes again. Jackie came to mind, her smiling face. She would miss the friendship she had gotten from Jenny, but she would miss the love she had been shown from Jackie. She now knew that Jackie did love her and probably always had. ‘Do I love her too?’ Dannie felt a loving warmth invade her body when she thought of Jackie. She could smell Jackie. She could see the face of Jackie in her mind. She felt the emotions of the past eight months. She had shared the most important things with Jackie first. She would die without Jackie in her life. Jackie had been the one to encourage her in her career and to help her get her business up and running. Jackie had invested her time and money in Dannie’s ideas. ‘I would fall apart without her.’ Dannie then turned her thoughts to the dance she and Jackie had shared earlier. She remembered the way it felt to be held in Jackie’s strong arms, the feeling of the strong thigh between her own. She remembered the warmth of the lips that kissed her, the taste of the tongue that had caressed her own. She had responded to everything. She looked into the smoldering fire in Jackie’s eyes and felt the fire invade her body, the fire that threatened to engulf her…heart, body, and soul. Dannie suddenly realized that she knew it was Jackie’s eyes that she was gazing into during the dance. She had continued with the dance and the seduction willingly. She wanted to be with Jackie that way. She had wanted to continue with what they started, but not in front of the guests. She wanted to be with Jackie. She wanted to be with the woman she loved. ‘I love her. I always have.’ She got down off the boulder and turned back toward the house and the woman she loved.
Jackie had gone back to the house. The party had apparently ended. Everyone was gone. Jenny and Susan were curled up in Jenny’s bed together. Jackie went outside to sit in the porch swing. That’s where Dannie found her when she returned. Sitting in the porch swing looking out over the quiet lake.
Dannie could see the worry lines around Jackie’s eyes. Her heart went out to the strong beautiful woman. Dannie walked up onto the porch. She saw the hurt in the blue eyes that looked at her, the blue eyes that she loved. She also saw the tears on Jackie’s cheeks. They were glistening in the moonlight. She quietly asked, “Jackie, why are you crying?”
Jackie looked into Dannie’s eyes and saw the love shining in them…love for her. Jackie replied, “I was so worried. I thought I had lost you. I thought you would leave.”
Dannie wiped the tears from Jackie’s cheeks and said, “That wont happen Jackie. We’re supposed to be together…forever.” Dannie’s only thought was to stop the hurt, stop the pain that was causing the tears. ‘What will I tell Jenny?’ her mind asked. She would think about that later. Right now, the woman she loved more than anything was in pain. Dannie went with her heart and walked over to Jackie and opened her arms and her heart to the woman before her, the other half of her soul. Jackie went into the arms without a thought and wept, this time she wept for the happiness that she had found. She heard the words that she had longed to hear. They were no louder than a whisper in the wind, “I love you Jackie Lewis…I always have.”
The two women went in the house and closed the door, leaving the hurt behind them. This would be a night of comfort and healing.
Jenny looked at the clock on her nightstand. It read one minute past midnight. She smiled and whispered quietly into the night, “Happy Birthday Jackie. Take care of the present I gave you.”
Dannie and Jackie shared a single sweet kiss before going to sleep, a kiss that started their path together, a path of love. They both slept quietly and peacefully in each other’s arms. Their hearts were now content, now whole.
