Let A Frown Be Your Umbrella
(Let A Smile Be Your Umbrella)

sung by Farley and Oscar the Grouch (Carroll Spinney)
not complete

Farley: Once I met a happy little bluebird
He was just as blue as he could be
In a little while
He began to smile
When he sang this merry song to me:
“Just let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day ...”

Oscar [interrupting angrily]: What is this? Hey, hold it! [Music ends.] Farley!

Farley: Oh, hi, Oscar.

Oscar: You are ruining a perfectly rotten rainy day with that sweet little song of yours!

Farley: Oh?

Oscar: That’s not how it goes! It goes like this:

[singing as music starts again]

Just let a frown be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day
And if your grouchie cries, just tell her that a frown will always pay
Whenever skies are gray, don’t worry or fret
A frown will bring the raindrops, and you’ll always get wet
So let a frown be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day!

[There may be some forgotten lines here.]

Farley: Just let a frown be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day

Oscar: And if your grouchie cries, just tell her that a frown will always pay

Farley: Whenever skies are gray, don’t worry or fret

Oscar: A frown will bring the raindrops, and you’ll always get wet

Both: So let a frown be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day!

[Music ends.]

Oscar: There! Now do you understand how the song goes?

Farley: Yeah, but ... I’m not sure I like it
