The area shown in this photograph was known as 'The Old Market Place'.
In this picture you would have been looking from the top of Peter Street
across to the building with the name of J. Simister on it, which was the
pawn - brokers shop in town. Notice the horse drawn tram with the open top
(if it was to rain you'd get a soaking). The horse drawn tram seen in
in this picture is just about to start along the track down Manchester Street
to Hollinwood.
This photograph was taken, on May 9th '99, in the same location as the Old photograph above, which was the top of Peter Street (which no longer exists). The building called 'Simisters' in the old photo above, is of course no longer there, it would have been behind the red brick building - right of centre in this photograph and in front of the 'skyscraper'.
