OLDHAM MUMPS
This picture taken around 1896 was at Rhodes Bank looking down Mumps to the railway bridge and the bottom end of Huddersfield Road beyond. This area at the time was a very popular shopping area, with Buckley and Proctors Mumps Bazaar and a variety of other little specialist shops. Although the more select shopping was always done along High Street up in the Towns Centre. It is generally accepted that the name Mumps comes from an old word "Mumper" meaning Beggar. The Old Bridge (Mumps Bridge) has since been rebuilt and raised to allow the 42 ton articulated wagons to pass under. All the buildings on the right have now gone and in their place is a bus station. Notice the Women of the times wearing shawls and spotless white aprons.
