SPL Aaron F. On Tuesday October 10th we will continue with the Orienteering Merit Badge. I need all scouts to bring their worksheets to the meeting. We will complete the merit badge during the campout this month at Duck Pond. I hope everyone can attend. We will complete the swimming merit badge this month for the ones who need the CPR requirements.

There will be a PLC on October 14th at 12:30 pm at the Scout Hut to finalize November, December and January campouts.

I have asked several times for all scouts to bring their Safety Merit Badge Worksheets to me. We have worked very hard on completing the worksheets and I would like for all scouts that participated to get credit and receive their badge. You need to bring them on Tuesday, October 10th.

There will be Halloween Party on October 24th; if you have not brought your $3.00 please do so by October 10th. There will be no meeting on October 31st.

We will be participating in the Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 11th in MHC. I would like for all scouts to attend and march in this parade.

Viking Patrol - PL Phillip B. This month we have done more work on our patrol flag and still working on a patrol motto. We should have a motto by the end of the month that we all agree on. The flag should be done soon. Hurray Vikings!!!!!

Roadrunner Patrol - PL Evan G. The Roadrunner patrol had a great time at Bogue Field in September. We had a successful turnout. We had some bloodshed thanks to some nasty barnacles on the dock but that was taken care of and we stayed out of the water from then on. We are also working on the safety merit badge and are hoping to complete it soon. For the month of October we are currently working on the swimming, safety and orienteering merit badges. I would like to congratulate Mac, Joe and Matthew for completing the clothing inflation requirement for the swimming merit badge this past week. We are currently preparing for our campout this month. That’s all from the Roadrunner Patrol.

SCOUTMASTER MINUTE:  Does anyone know the significance of the phrase “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"? It's the time, day, and month when, in 1918, the peace treaty was signed bringing an end to the conflict we know today as World War I. People notice and remember unusual coincidences like this. In the years following 1918 many nations chose to honor those who fought and died in the War with special ceremonies held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In England, an Unknown Soldier was buried in Westminster Abbey. Remember last week when I talked about Westminster Abbey as the sacred and hollowed place where the people of Great Britain honor their heroes. In France an Unknown Soldier was buried in Paris beneath the Arch de Triumph, a sacred place to the French. In the United States, on November 11, 1921, we created the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Our Congress made this day a national holiday, originally known as Armistice Day - to honor the end of the "war to end all wars". Unfortunately, there were other wars. Over time, other nameless heroes have been added to our Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Today, there is an unidentified soldier from WWI, WWII, The Korean War, and the Vietnam War. This sacred place has come to symbolize all those who have fought and died in the service of our country. Armistice Day has been renamed Veteran's Day. Veteran's Day should be a time when we remember, and honor, all that have served in this nation's armed forces.  For a brief time, 1971-1978, Veteran's Day was moved from November 11th. Congress turned it into one of those Monday - 3 day weekend holidays. People, however, remembered the coincidental date. Fate or the hand of God perhaps, had marked forever the 11th of November - Congress had to change it back. Scouts Honor our Veteran's on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and remember how much we owe these men.
