| The 723d was originally organized as the
614th Railway Engineer Battalion, an organized Reserve unit, in 1924. In
1933 it was redesignated as the 614th Engineer Battalion. It affiliated
with the Union Pacific Railroad Company in 1940.
It was redesignated as the 723d Engineer Railway Operating Battalion on 21 February, 1941 and redesignated as the 723rd Railway Operating Battalion, Transportation Corps, on 1 December, 1942. It was ordered into active military service in December, 1943 and inactivated on 3 January, 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. It was reactivated on 29 November 1947 at Cheyenne Wyoming as the 723d Transportation Railway Operating Battalion. It was inactivated on 27 February 1951. During World War II it received campaign credit for Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. It had occupation duty in Germany from 2 May-30 October 1945. |
