8:10am I feel like writing this morning, for some reason. This morning is another gloomy one (one of MANY here in Ithaca) but Ithaca is somehow not made for gloomy days. In Austria, where I was over spring break, people have adapted to such weather, which is frequent there too (in some places, anyway). In Innsbruck and Salzburg, on the ski slopes there are lots of bright lights, happy music playing, every cafe serves a wide variety of alcoholic beverages. Maybe this is a deceiving view, but I thought people there are just happy so much more. In Canada too there are things to beat the long winters- the beautiful bright-lit underground spaces in Montreal, for example. I don't know of anything like that here. Cornell is just bland, and the atmospheric restaurants, bars, and other places in Collegetown are mostly dark, moody spaces. We sure beat Europe in the amount of electricity we waste on lighting, but it doesn't come out to be very effective.
