Time for pushing our luck again on judging films by their trailers

By Jeff Vice
Deseret News movie critic

I'm not a psychic, but I play one in the the newspaper.

As many of you may have already discovered, I'm not above sticking my neck out, especially in the way of predictions. And I'll proudly note that I'm getting pretty good at them. The Oscars? Usually I can pick the major winners with at least 75 percent accuracy.

However, at the risk of sounding a little cocky, I'm even better at judging a movie by its trailer. Twice this year I've tried to guess how good films are by these minutelong teases, and both times I've acquitted myself quite nicely.

In those columns (in February and July), I correctly predicted there was something off about "The Haunting" (though even I couldn't have guessed it would be quite so bad).

And I even figured that "The Iron Giant" would be something special albeit from the original trailer and not the stupid "heavy metal" TV spots (featuring the Scorpions song "Rock You Like a Hurricane") that left the target audience scratching its collective head.

. . .

You can also add "Sleepy Hollow" and "Toy Story 2" to the must-see list the prospect of each has me too giddy for words.

. . .
